PS2 controllers

What PS2 controller is of highest quality?

I got the cheapest I could get at some store in the mall and they were great for a while. I never really used the analog sticks, but now that I'm trying, the primary analog stick has a noticable dead spot, maybe a quarter inch from the center. I've got a PS2->USB converter on here and I'm playing Midnight Club II (which is a blast, by the way.) The analog stick is pretty irritating to the point where I'm currently using the digital pad to play. (Rewording: it requires more left "push" to turn left than it does right "push" to turn right. aka, the steering is unbalanced and does not work very well when controlling vehicles at high speeds.)

In Control Panel where you can test it, the little red X jumps a good ways to the left instead of sliding smoothly when you push the stick. I'm 99% sure this is the result of my cheapass controller.

I went to Funcoland and they wanted $25 for a brand name Sony PS2 controller. WTF is that.

Should I suck it up and shell out for the Sony controller? Is there a cheaper but same quality alternative? Other suggestions? Swiss or cheddar?

Thanks.

I just shelled out $23.95 for a brand new Sony brand PS2 controller yesterday. I would say go with the brand name.

The Sony ones are the best for wired ones. I like my Logitech for wireless but found its hard to play ProSkater with it. Its fine for Vice City and Gran Turismo tho.

The Sony brand (first party) controller are the best PS1/2 controller you can buy. They're still flimsy pieces of crap compared to the Xbox and GCN controllers, but they're the best you can get if you want a PSX pad.

What drivers are you using?

Bleh. For $25 it better perform sexual favors or something. Thats outrageous. (But it looks like I'll be paying.)

I'm not using any drivers. Or, default XP drivers. I plug the adapter in and WinXP recognizes 2 4 axis 16 button joystick/gamepads.

A bit off my own topic, but why is Game Cube == GCN? Where did the N come from? Something about the translation, or were they just jealous the other consoles had longer acronyms?

Um, quit being a cheapskate. You GET what you pay for. How else can 3rd party companies afford to have their controllers priced $10 cheaper? Because they're made out of cheaper parts. 1st party controllers have always been the highest quality out of any console. You buy that cheap 3rd party sh!t when you have friends over and need a spare controller, not when you use it consistently as your normal gamepad.

I would use a different set, ones that might actually allow you to set the dead zone. PSXpad

Otherwise, you'll have to deal with the dual analog because the PSpad joysticks are short and stubby and don't have the best range of motion.

I bought cheap third party crap because I was originally ripping the controllers open and smearing them with solder for another project. These were residuals that I had just played MAME and Tony Hawk with. Now that I want something better, I wanted to make sure there wasn't something that required me to drop $25 unnessicarily.

I have some sort of firmware thing in my converter. These drivers are for do-it-yourself straight wiring.
