PS1 emulation on Mac for dummies.

A friend of mine is a hardcore anime enthusiast and mac user, and very much would like to try a wide variety of classic PS1 RPGs that were not ported to other consoles. However, as a PC enthusiast I've never really had need to do this. Can anyone here recommend a good PS1 emulator for OSX?

The only rpg I remember from the PS1 is legend of dragoon. I remember it using more than one disc.

The number of people who actually buy games for their emulators is pretty much zero. The number of people who claim they will is sky-high. Just sayin'.

I emulate super nintendo games. They don't sell them anymore, and I owned them when I was little, I just don't have the system anymore.

Do you own them _now_? Because, if you don't, thanks for proving my point. 🙂

I get your point, but for games out of production and not sold in stores, you can say you're gonna buy it all you want but the developer doesn't see even a penny from it either way.

I didn't claim I was going to buy it. It's the same as owning a recent PC game and having your dog chew it up. I'm not going to pay for another copy.

My point is just that it shouldn't be illegal to emulate SNES games because they aren't even sold anymore. Yet Nintendo is stopping all the Super Mario ROMs on the internet. If they were still sold, then I would understand.

They are still sold via the Nintendo Wii Virtual Console, and some SNES games have been remade or rereleased on the GBA or DS.

PS1 games might be a bit different because you can just drop the CD in your drive and play them with the appropriate emulator. I know there was an old PS1 emulator that ran under OS 9 called Connectix Virtual Game Station. Just put your game in and play. Cartridge-based games are obviously a different story - to move them onto your computer, you'd have to get some sort of USB adapter.

Most emulators use the BIOS from the system in question and the "rule of thumb" is unless you own the software, you don't have the right to have it in any other form (Sony might say you don't regardless, but it at least gives peace of mind). So, using PCSX for playing PSX games would be illegal if you do not own a PSX that has the same BIOS that you're using.

Actually, years back, I owned bleem! and played real PSX games on it. It was a lot cheaper than buying a PSX console, and better quality.

Don't quote me on this but I'm pretty sure emulation software itself is legal. However, downloading ROM dumps and ISOs clearly is illegal. With the price of a brand new Playstation 2 hovering around $130 these days, it really doesn't make sense to go through all the hassle. PS2 of course is backwards compatible with PS1 games. The PS3 is as well (all models) and even allows you to play PS1 titles on a PSP over Remote Play. Both should be compatible with most if not all PS1 titles.

A lot of emulators based on more recent (fifth generation onward) systems tend to have vary limited compatibility. PCSX seems like your best bet but I'd stick with the official channels.

It's illegal to distribute roms, but emulators are legal as long as they don't include a dump of the hardware's bios.
Roms that you acquire yourself from legally owned systems (both games and bios dumps) are legal. Providing them online is not in the same way that providing mp3s of songs online is not.

All PS3 models are still fully compatible with PS1 games.
According to Wikipedia, the reason the 40gb models don't have PS2 BC was because Sony removed the Graphics Synthesizer GPU. The old 80gb just lacked the Emotion Engine CPU. The Emotion Engine's tasks were handled by the Cell but it still kept the PS2's GPU. So, it wasn't 100% software emulation. By contrast, PS1 games are 100% software emulated on the Cell so PS1 BC remained. The PS3 never contained any PS1 hardware chips for BC. Of course this bit of news is a blow to people thinking PS2 BC would come to the 40gb/new 80gb in a firmware update. 😛
