Prudish Rant: Midday South Park Commercials

I've been meaning to rant about this for a while, but I just finally got around to it.

I periodically catch Comedy Central's midday Scrubs reruns, and of course CC is running ads for its other shows as part of the commercials. The problem is that they have a filler SP commercial made up of the first few episodes of SP from this half season, including the Tourettes episode (in fact it's a large part of the commercial). It goes without saying that it's an incredibly filthy episode, and they use just about every profanity and semi-profanity from the episode except for shit and fuck.

Now am I being too prudish in complaining that they shouldn't be running that kind of advertisement in the middle of the day? The content of the show is fine (and hilarious) at the 10pm and later timeblock they normally air the show at, but it seems inappropriate to be using such material in midday advertisements.

And yes, get off of my lawn.😛

That commercial is nothing compared to Drawn Together's commercials. But CC's entire lineup is adult in nature, I can't think of a single show that is really kid-friendly. MadTV, Daily Show, Colbert, South Park, Drawn Together, Standup routines. It's basically an adult network.

The OP's issue to me seems to be less with it on during Scrubs as opposed to on in the middle of the day, when kids are more likely to be watching. I'm all for saying the FCC is over-the-top on many regs relating to their 'children protection,' but taking it easy on advertisements for those eps, as well as Drawn Together (period) at that time is probably a good idea. Its not as if SP doesn't have some other recent eps to draw on: Night of the Living Homeless, Fantastic Easter Special, Imaginationland, More Crap, (fittingly named right after More Crap) Lice Capades, etc. All Season 11, and with the exception of Lice Capades, excellent eps with parts that can appeal to the target audience and be more conscious of the timeslot.
 
Cable or OTA? I'm pretty sure they can air whatever the fuck they want on cable... within reason at least. FCC doesn't have jurisdiction.


hmm.. google says they do, but it seems to go unenforced. Perhaps they figure prudes are free to unsubscribe from cable. Then again, no one forces you to watch OTA broadcasts either.

That may be true but what's more important is that little kids shouldn't be watching Comedy Central. My kids definitely won't be!
 
Yea like someone pointed out, if it was truly midday, most kids aren't watching TV...compared to the smut in an average NETWORK broadcast soap opera, south park is nothing. Also, it is Comedy Central, a cable channel that a young kid shouldn't be allowed to watch anyway.

On top of that, there are parental controls for nearly every cable provider anyways. OP, I hold respect for your own personal opinion on the matter. However, please do not publicly complain about this kind of stuff when you have complete control over it. Such complaints only lead to ruining it for the rest of us who may not share your opinion.

Yeah, I know what you mean. There's a few other commercials for Adult Swim that don't belong on daytime TV either.
 
About the only thing broadcast on TV that makes me want to rant is all these ridiculous drug and personal hygene product ads they run during prime time. I saw one Monday night for feminine napkins that involved a model mechanical bull. My wife and I were both sitting there looking at this going WTF?

Congress makes noises every once in a while about trying to have the FCC have some say in content on cable/satellite but so far as I know right now any restraints are entirely voluntary. As far as I know FCC authority for cable and satellite is more on the technical and franchising details and not in content.

I am so sick and tired of the idea of increasing censorship. With all of the vast number of changes that we have seen come to pass regarding censoring material in this country has anyone sat back and considered how much it is helping? I don't think it is doing squat! I don't see our daily lives or the daily lives of our children getting any better because of it.

I am in much more favor of providing simple options for the people to be able to choose what they want to be exposed to and what they want their kids to be exposed to. If you are an adult, then you have no excuse to not change that channel, not fast forward through that movie scene, or not skip those pages in that book or magazine. If you are a parent worried about your kids then do the right thing and educate them about what you fear they will be exposed to because no matter what you do to try to censor them they will be exposed to it if they want to be. Other than that, take advantage of the simple parental controls available to you. Above all else, if you value your freedom of what you want to be or not to be exposed to then allow the rest of us to value ours too.

This is 3:00pm and 3:30pm. Around here at least, the kids are all out of school by 3:15pm.

And to everyone who's rolling their eyes at me, at no point did I say CC was appropriate for kids (obviously it isn't). But as it's on virtually every home with cable/sat service, you can be sure that there are plenty of kids flipping through it at least.

Besides, I'm not even arguing this for the kids. Scrubs, TDS, etc are all fairly tame shows compared to the SP ad; I just think words like douchebag are over the top at 3pm in the afternoon.
 
FCC has limited jurisdiction over cable broadcasting. The FCC deals with broadcasting over public airwaves. Cable is operated by private companies. That's why they can show uncensored movies on HBO but not NBC.

On the radio here in Portland, OR, we have the Marconi Show which runs from 3pm to like 7 or 8pm, whenever. Drive time. Prime listening hours for any children that might still conceivably listen to the radio. This particular DJ has a long history, with his most famous moment being him getting fired for airing the audio of some journalist being beheaded by Jihadists a few years back (over and over and over and joking about it). His current show has a spot which plays about every hour which uses the word douchebag.

Now, I find his show to be in poor taste. And I'm honestly surprised he isn't hit with FCC fines. But I don't think that he should be censored. If I don't want to listen, I don't. If I don't want my kids to listen, well, I get over it, because every minute they spend listening to this douchebag is one minute less online where they can lookup what exactly a douchebag is and get extremely graphic imagery or videos showing them more than anyone needs to see.

You will never stop the loss of innocence. It is a natural process, it happened to you at one age, and it obviously didn't kill you. Get the fuck over yourself, step down from your soapbox, and try to remember what your life was like back then. If you're going to tell me you were a goody two shoes that never did anything wrong, then good, your children will probably be the same way, through a combination of genes and upbringing. But chances are you were, like most children, a little asshole who was much more concerned with doing things you weren't supposed to be doing than following some bizarre edicts handed down by adults that didn't make a lick of sense at the time. It's basic human nature to be curious, and you should be glad your children have such a desire to learn.
