I've been on Prozac for about 2 weeks and before this I was more than happy with my 2 overclocked 8800GTs in SLI. Now I have this insatiable urge to buy 2 GeForce GTX 260 Core 216s. The info I got with the Prozac from the pharmacy never mentioned anything about the urge to buy things. What should I do? Anyone else on Prozac have the same feelings?

Well IANAD and I'm not on antidepressants but according to my friend Wikipedia SSRI drugs don't take full effect until after 6-8 weeks and can cause more depression in that timeframe. Also side effects are more prevalent during the first 1-4 weeks. Maybe that's why you want to buy more stuff. I'd wait if I were you. :)

And the urge to buy more is very common in mania. I'd suspect that the drug is messing a bit with you now but just give yourself time to get used to it. I'd wager that's not the only side effect you're having now, right?

Last week, my doctor put me on something called Celexa. And I just ordered a bunch of stuff last night from Newegg

That's true, but let's hope his doctor didn't prescribe him an SSRI, if he's bipolar. Alot of people who start taking any antidepressant actually act somewhat manic for a few weeks, though, because their brains are going through an adjustment period. When you've been depressed for a long enough time, your brain becomes accustomed to being depressed, so as the depression fades, it isn't abnormal to show some manic tendencies, which usually fade fairly quickly.

A good comparison would be someone who had been carrying 100 lbs. on their back for about a year, and then one day, the weight is gone. For a few days, they'd most likely run everywhere they went, because they'd feel so different without that weight on their back. If the manic tendencies don't go away within a month, you need to go back to your doctor, because that's usually an indication of too high of a dose.

With that said, SLI'd 8800GT's are already overkill for any 19" monitor. Save your money.

Yes, you're right. Thank you. Prozac is an SSRI (Selective Seretonin Reuptake Inhibitor). :)

Stop taking antidepressants dudes... I taken them for my anxiety in the past, but then stopped because these meds are worse than poison. They mess up your head, and according to some articles on the net cause cancer. Sure it can all be BS, but in my experience, antidepressants caused all kinds of really bad side effects, some of the worst of which were "striped" vision and inability to orgasm. :( I rather "tough it out" then take this poison. I advise you do the same.

Either way, these meds don't "cure" anything! They only relieve SOME people of their symptoms as long as they take their pills. AS soon as you stop, all symptoms return after a while. So better to focus on "curing" yourself with therapy, exercise, etc, as there is no "medical" cure.

As for the video card, save your money, unless you have a huge screen. I game on a 17 inch monitor at 1280x1024, and I still haven't found a game that I wouldn't be able to run at max settings with my card(in sig). It's a very outdated card by today's standards, but it's more than good enough for my purposes.

Um...please don't dispense medical suggestions here...my GF is bipolar and I can tell you, you don't want to be around her without the meds!

Just because they didn't work for you (or maybe you just didn't find the right medication or the right dosage or whatever) you certainly shouldn't go around telling people not to take meds.

Yes, you're right in some cases. But Prozac has already helped me. AD aren't for everybody but they are a must for some.

I'll control my urge to buy 2 core 216s. Thanks everyone for keeping me on the right path.

Be careful .. some here would even suggest religion to control your depression.:p

.. and you really have to be thankful you are not an AMD fan
--by now, knowing the fans here, you would have been talked into a complete upgrade with CF-x4 .. 2 x 4870x2!

Agreed. My GF is on anti-depressants at the moment and I can say that she has been better since she started on them than the 6 months previous, even if it may only be a placebo. However, I think that the dosage level is key. I think it took about 4 different levels to get right for my girlfriend. Most of the people I know who have said that the pills didn't work simply tried their first prescription didn't like it and gave up on them.

About the GFX cards. You probably only need one of those cards with your screen so a single GTX 260 would be enough let alone 2.

Though I think the compulsion urges may not be that uncommon as I know my GF bought a heap of make-up and clothes. Though that may just be because she is a woman
