What exactly is a proxy server? Is this the proper name for the thing that allows me to "use" my home internet connection from school in order to bypass stupid blocking software? if so, what is the easiest software to run at home to do this? all i have to do is go to "proxy" in IE to set it to my home ip right?

this is what i want to happen :

SCHOOL ------->>> HOME ---->>>> internet

because the school lets me go home, but not to many internet sites.

then back:

internet--->> HOME --- >> School

this is the theory right?

someone let me know if i am on the right track

thanks alot

A proxy server is a server between you and your destination that finishes your request on behalf of you. Meaning when you use a proxy server you say "hay proxy, get me this web page" and it goes out and gets it for you, because of this it's really easy to have a rule set that tells the proxy what it's allowed to give you.

If the network at school is setup properly you'll have to go through the proxy to get to the Internet, so you won't be able to get around it.

yes

just as triangleboy.com used to operate. You will have to do all of the program-running on the proxy server however, because Morpheus and such usually use predetermined ports, unless you setup the proxy server options.....very easy to do....

My recommendation..which is fool proof.....Use the Proxy as a dummy that will do all the work, and have an ftp setup on it sharing the files you downloaded. THen just upload them to school..easy as pie

I know what you mean, we do it at our school. You guys running Bess? I've also thought about running a proxy server here at home. :)

You'll probably have to use Linux to to the proxy serving. Though you could try using this.

the analogX proxy looks pretty fool proof (god i love AX!), but the only problem is it things my computer is 192.168.0.3, which it is, but i am DmZ on my linksys router, so shouldn't it think i am my 65.x.x.x address?

Talk to the school admins to change their policy or live with it. Learn at school, download your pr0n at home. Circumventing the measures on the school network can (and should) get you in a lot of trouble.

thanks for the good luck ;)
what you don't understand is A) no one in this county knows more than the students, and B) even if they did they are too lazy to watch.

thanks everyone else for all your help!

that was totally uncalled for, wishing someone else to get in trouble for being creative

i wish you would go to hell, but i didnt come right out and say it

keep your comments to yourself

This is a public forum, it's whole base is people's comments.

And on that note I agree with n0c, you're working to knowingly work around a facilities security setup and should be punished accordingly. If you want to browse pr0n or warez do it on your own time.

do you guys have a mental block? i just said i am not looking at pornography or warez, maybe you should take your stereotypes out of my posts

i know its a public forum, do you think im that stupid? you dont have to inform me of something everyone here obviously knows

and, for everyones sake, you CAN keep your lame comments to yourself, i dont care if everyone here disagrees with me, but there is no need to get on someones case for simply trying to figure something out

i cant help it that i want to learn more about computers and how they work, im sorry that somehow sets me in a stereotype of looking up pr0n at school, which isnt at all the case

But that's not the point, you're still circumventing security measures of your school for some reason, if that reason is really good enough the school will let you legally do it I bet.

Learning is good, breaking the law isn't.

If you want to get to a blocked site, talk to the admin. Explain how these sites will help your education. That will most likely get them unblocked. Trying to work around the security measures in place is not the way to do things. Dont tell me how "learning this stuff" is your excuse for doing it. Learning and implimenting these things are totally different. Ive done both. I was given a *HUGE* break at one of them. Trying to SCREW with the admin by getting around the measures he has implimented is *RUDE* *UNCALLED FOR* *CHILDISH* and *LAME*. Keep your lame questions to yourself. Get a life. *READ* instead of trying to make someone else's life harder. I put up with children like you daily, and Im tired of the 3r337 hax0rz thinking they should have more rights than the rest of us.

And I take back what I said about hoping you get expelled. That was uncalled for and wrong. I apologize. I hope they bring federal charges against you. Ill see you in Hell little one :)

<< what you don't understand is A) no one in this county knows more than the students >>

If you know so much, then you obviously don't need our help.

<< thanks everyone else for all your help! >>

Just so there's no misunderstanding...your rude comments have pissed away any chance of you getting any more "help" on this forum.

Take your snotty attitude somewhere else.
It's not welcome here.

i lose

that was well put, i never thought of it that way

i guess i was just trying to see if it could be done, and it did infact work, but only for like 10 minutes and i cant figure out why

but my point wasnt to really do anything illegal, i mean i know it was, but i wasnt gonna do anything bad with it, if that makes sense

anyways, lets just drop it, thanks for the help everyone

You have to realize that a number of the people on these forums work in this industry, so when you ask how to get around some security measure in place you could be asking to get around our security measures. It's like going to a car forum and asking how to steal cars, sure they may know how to do it because they work on them, but chances are they won't help you.

i do understand what you are saying though, and i guess i asked the wrong way or gave the wrong impression

one thing my school network does, however, is block a ton of perfectly good sites

sometimes it blocks google, sometimes it blocks msn.com, and often it blocks many researching pages which are very helpful to have access to

i actually have asked to get this changed, but no one ever listens to us, so this is really the only way we COULD do it, i wont though because it could potentially cause big problems

If you can list great sites (like google) with great reasons why they should be unblocked (better than google rocks (which it does)) there would be no good reason for them not to listen. Write up a professional type proposal. You are at school, it shouldnt be too hard (and hell, your english teacher or whatever could possibly give you some credit for it if its good). Explain which sites in particular you think should be unblocked and why they should be unblocked. Stress sites that can help your education and reasearch. If they dont atleast take your paper into consideration, dont worry about it. They arent very good at what they do then.

Heh, unless you're the guy who's in charge of doing the watching, you should never assume no one is watching.

good idea, sounds like something i should do

i have tried explaining before, but nothing ever seemed to work...i bet if i wrote a professional looking report, we could probably approve some of our prohibited sites

Working within the system is supposed to be the best way to get things done. *Shrug* its worth a shot and less bad consequences ;)
