I have a winXP o.s. , pathetic 56k dial-up (internal win modem) into my schools server. When I put the value in for the IP addy and the port settings I can't get any web pages to load. The only box I have checked is "Proxy Server". HELP?! TIA

I guess I don't understand how a proxy I.P. address works. I thought I could just change the (i.p. address-port) settings in "connections", "settings", "proxy server". At least that's what the few instructions I've read said to do. I thought it sounded a little simple. So, how do I do it?

Well a Proxy is where one connection is shared by many PC's, it's like a more permanent and organised version of the Internet Connection Sharing.

But you don't wanna be running a Proxy on 56k Soft modem....that would be horrible! ;)

The only instance in which you would need access to a Proxy Server in your case is if you surf the Internet via the school connection.

a) are you allowed Internet Access from the school's connection?

b) in case of a) being Yes, are you sure you've added the Proxy settings to the dial-up setting for your school and not into the 'Lan Settings'?

Yes I do surf with the schools server and the I.P. address changes each time you dial in as it is dynamic. Is there a seperate "proxy server" of some sort that the school must have for me to dial into or can I just alter the settings on my computer?

I am going through: Tools, Internet Options, Connections tab, (under "Dial-Up and Virtual Network settings") "Settings", then I check the "Use a proxy server for this connection (These settings will not apply to other connections)" box and fill in the I.P. Address and port setting number. The LAN setting option is below this option so no, I am not in the LAN settings.

OK, that is correct. It's possible that you've got the wrong settings from your School. Check it again and re-enter the info.

What settings from my school? Do I need another I.P. address other than the proxy one(s) I have chosen? I'm trying to bypass/mask the schools I.P. address (that works just fine for surfing) so I don't need a different setting (I.P. address/port setting) from the school if that is what you meant by setting.

Is there a "walkthrough" for my XP operating system as far as all and any settings in configuring a proxy setup (for a relative computer dummy)?
