proxy / msn messenger problem

hey all, i've got wingate version 4 going here at home, and i can't get msn messenger to work on the other computer. the network itself is working fine, IE is working as well, but MSN messenger won't. i think it has something to do with that SOCKS stuff but i'm not sure. can anyone help?

If you're using socks 4, make sure port 1863 is open.

how exactly do i 'use' socks 4? or any socks for that matter?
