I just got the Proxim RangeLAN-DS Wireless 802.11b card in the mail from justdeals (http://stores.yahoo.com/justdeals/). Anyway, most of you probably already knew that it was a very good deal at $33.95. Well . . . after I received the package, I found out that the card can work in peer-to-peer mode without an wireless access point.

I never realized that I can have wireless networking at home without an access point. I have held off purchasing wireless equipment so far because I couldn't afford the access point.

Anyway, after finding this out, the deal is even better. It cuts my wireless budget practically in half. Anyway, if you want to get rid of network cables at home, but don't want to pay for an access point, this is a great deal for you. I just purchased a few more cards today.

By the way, this card uses the Prism II chipset and is the same card as the Zcomax XI-300. So if you were planning on getting one of those, here is an alternative. But I can't seem to get the card to wrok with my wireless sniffers. Anyone know a windows sniffer that would work with this card?

anyway, the card at justdeals is a good deal. use a $5 off minimum coupon to save more.

Just got one from just deals to replace my rangelan ds that died on me, I took apart the one that died and saw zcom on the pcb, also saw xi300b on the board and noticed that the rubber cap is covering a connection for an external antena, where can I get an antena for this card?

It would be nice to see ministumbler adding support for this card but we will have to wait and see.........

xjqian-this card is not supported under XP...and probably won't ever be, since they are no longer supported by Proxim.

there are some good deals in the forums for XP capable cards, however.

This card is the same as the Zcomax XI-300 card. You can use the same driver and firmware. In fact, I installed the Zcomax XI-300 driver last night and got one of the sniffer programs to work with it. The Zcomax XI-300 does have XP driver support.

you can always go for US robotics 2410 or 2415 for about $60+. It has $30 rebate on it so the cost is still the same. And it works under XP/2k/me/98. I have two running with d-link 900ap.

gypsymoth, can you tell me the details about this? I've already installed Zcomax driver. But can't go any further. I do need to figure out how to make it work with XP. Thanks a lot.

Looking at the oemsetup.inf inside XI300B1729.zip (XI-300B), it says "This installation script supports 98,Me,2000&XP for the Wireless LAN Adapters."

That's all I know. I haven't actually tried to install this card on XP yet.

gypsymoth, thank you so much. Finally, it comes out. Actually, i emailed their product manager early this year about the XP driver. He promised it would be available in spring. Finally, spring arrives, now ;)
