I stopped by Bay Area Frys today and noticed that the same drive that is sold at COmpusa for $399-$50 Instant Rebate-$100 mail in rebate is sold for $299($399-$100 instant rebate). Compusa price matches any local retailers according to their terms printed in their ads. So why not pricematch Compusa $349 to Fry's$299 price and use Compusa $100 rebate.....
Havent tried it, but I might try tommorow...

The price of the drive is "theoretically" $399 at both places.

The instant rebates count like rebates, not as the base price.

From my experience with frys, the item will show up at a final cost in their system nor will there be any mention of instant rebate on the receipt. So if you buy at frys first, then go to compusa and they call up frys and provide the sku to do the price check, the frys zombie will give back the final price. Again, I might be wrong, but doesnt hurt to try....

Can someone who HAS the drive tell me if it burns CD-R's also (I've seen conflicting specs) so I'd like to know from someone who actually has the drive.

thanks(please PM also)

Now that I think about it, Id rather buy this drive for $299 from Frys because I can return it for a full refund within 30 day no questions asked.....but then again, $100 premium(if rebate comes through)......I'll try at least

I obtained a printed price quote from frys for that drive and it shows up as $299.
Your only problem would be tracking down these drives at Compusa as I picked up the last unit in the Santa Clara store and they dont appear on Compusa site anymore. I will go back to compusa and try to pricematch to $299.

I dont have an amex Blue card, but someone with the Amex Blue can buy the drive at compusa for $349 and then pricematch it to Fry's printed price quote of $299 and get another $100 MIR for the total of $199 after rebate.
I dont have the scanner with me right now, but if you have a fax machine, PM me with your fax number and I will send you that price quote printout

^^^BUMP^^^

vladgur's the man.

I ***CONFIRMED*** this deal today. With vladgur's fax of Fry's quote of $299.99 for the drive in hand, I drove to the CompUSA where I purchased the drive on Sunday for $349.99. Showed the fax to the csr, he verified the price with Fry's and promptly issued me a gift card of $54.12. So after I send in my rebate, the price will come to ~$200 for the drive.

I can confirm, having looked at it, that this is strictly DVD-R/DVD-Ram burner, it can read CDRs however

Nevermind, I decided to keep the drive and went in for the pricematch. Got $50 back, so after rebate, this DVD-R/DVD-Ram burner will be $199+tax :) good luck to you all

See, this is why it sucks there are no Fry's on the east coast...
However outpost, which is part of fry's or vice versus, has offices here in CT, so I get to pay sales tax on any outpost purchases.

You lucky bastards :)

I don't have the drive, but there is no reason why it wouldn't burn CD-Rs also. I have read a bit about various DVD burners, and (to the best of my knowledge) they can all burn CD-Rs in addition to DVD-Rs.
