Prototype 2 Impressions...

Prototype 1 was a mess.

It had it moments, but generally speaking it was all over the place. The graphics were sub-par and coupled with a banal aesthetic, making it fairly routine. The gluttonous leveling system shoveled new skills and power-ups at you at an overwhelming pace, and after 4-5 hours I found it to be, frankly, a pretty stale experience. However it felt like that game had a ton of potential. All someone had to do is work out the pacing of it all.

I'm happy to report Prototype 2 has dial back where it needed to, and improved in many of it's systems.

Graphics
Though it's not going to win any awards, the game is now much more appealing to see in action. Textures are now more defined, there appear to be many more things happening on screen, contemporary visual effects are now in place, and it all happens at a fairly sustainable framerate.

Despite all this, it's probably worth mentioning most characters in the game lack any real character to define them other than "I'M UPSET! BLARGH!". That is to say, there is very little depth to anyone in their design and thought. Is this a surprise? Not sure. Plus the cutscenes appear to be running is a much lower framerate than the actual gameplay segments.

Gameplay
Much like the first one, this game is extremely fast and vicious. However unlike the first one it's very rewarding. Moves are responsive, and gave me a sense of extreme power. Running, jumping, gliding and smashing through things amongst the people in this world made me feel unique. I suppose trashing 57 foes in a matter of seconds helps with that though.

Health is replenished by "absorbing" other people. That is to say, you snatch someone out of the crowd and slurp them up, with tentacles, into your skin. Its disgustingly thrilling every. single. time.

Once the game takes the training wheels off and opens up the city, you're allowed to go wherever--yup, time to party! Seriously, running down the street and up the side of a building to the top, leaping hundreds of feet into the air, snapping into a glide and then air-thrusting as you near the ground and then finally slamming into the ground like a goddamn boss is awesome!

Radical Entertainment has done a wonderful job of dialing back the skill system just enough to keep it rewarding and enticing, and not annoyingly overwhelming like the first.

Side-missions yield gameplay rewards and not just pointless achievements or trophies. For example finding all 5 radio drops (similar to the Satallite Uplinks in iNFAMOUS) will unlock a list of options where you can boost melee damage by 10%, or even jump 10% higher. They're fun to seek out, thanks to the furiously quick gameplay, and make sense to the narrative.

I don't mind cussing all the much, but when it's gratuitous it's annoying. The protagonist makes damn sure he drops the F-bomb in almost every scene, because you know, HE'S REALLY PISSED OFF GUYS!! In fact in one instance where he got frustrated with using a computer he was like "WHAT THE FUCK MAN, I DON'T KNOW HOW TO USE THIS FUCKING THING. THIS FUCKING THING SUCKS. FUCKING COMPUTERS!!!!!!111ONE".

Ok. ok. We get it. He's upset. I suppose my annoyance with it all is because it just comes across as lazy. There are many other ways to express frustration. How about trying to do it through gameplay? Blah. Tangent.

Conclusion
Anyway, I really do like Prototype 2. The sense of speed and power the game gives you in second to none. inf act I don't think I've ever played a video game that knows how to make you feel like you're completely able to traversing a city within a few moments, and without flying. It's a very good video game.

Side-Tracking Thought
However this one more thing I'd like to share--food for thought really.

At one point in the game I went to slurp up one of the Blackwatch soldiers and he exclaimed "Killing me won't bring back your family Heller!". It was a reminder that my mission was a pointless one--he was right. Though it was a very small morsel of the overall Prototype 2 experience, it was enough to completely take me out of the game. What the hell was I doing? Yes the protagonist was angry, seeking vengeance, but I couldn't help but wonder what the point was. Perhaps all this is a missed opportunity for Activision? What about choice? What about cause and effect? What's happening to all these people I've been slurping up for health? What if this game offered different paths with varying conclusions? Something other than a path filled with the lust for vengeance, blood and power.

It's true, Radical Entertainment and Activision intended to make the video game they made, but like Clint Hocking with Far Cry 2, why not take the opportunity to push farther a flawed game (Prototype 1) into new territory?

I've not played Prototype, but it sounds like if they did that then it would be just like Infamous.

Yes, and that's sort of the point as well.

Remember when both these games came out, and it was around the exact same time? People thought they were essentially the same game, and I think because of that they're sort of competitors (even if they're not the same). If your competitor is creating a more rich and meaningful experience, shouldn't you try to one up them? How about at least being on par?

Offering choice doesn't always have to be a good vs evil thing right? In fact, I personally think (at least at this point) that it's more interesting to offer a grey area like in The Witcher 2? The often cited example is Han Solo too.

Honestly I'm not even sure where I'm going with this, just sort of thinking out load and trying to spawn a good discussion. :)

GREAT write up. I was one of the few people that liked Prototype a lot... I've been on the fence with this one but it sounds like I should get it.

Prototype is still to this day my go-to game for releasing anger. Is Prototype 2 better for that, warcrow? :p

Thanks for the write-up WC.

I was debating on whether to get this now or wait, and I am still torn. Did they fix the issues with the combat from the first game?

Hrm what in particular was the issue for you?

It doesn't feel all that different actually. The lock-on (left-trigger) is still sort of useless, but overall it works ok I guess.

Wasn't Prototype the game that you had to press X and Square, or Square and Circle at the same time for some moves. Maybe I'm confused or I'm thinking of different game?

To do the "ultra" (I forget what they're called) moves you hold two buttons at once, yes. I never really thought it was a problem, but I didn't use them too often.

It's a better game in almost every way, and sounds like something you would enjoy Drako. :)

I also liked Prototype 1 very much, and thought it was ridiculous that everyone was knocking it's graphics when something like Skyrim is called beautiful. The only time Prototypes graphics looked horrid, was when you were really close to something, which is nothing compared to the blocky distance view of Skyrim.

I think most people didn't like 1 because it was so freaking hard. Trying to get into a military base with those sensors all around could take 10 tries and running away before you might get in unseen. It literally has the difficulty of 10 modern games; and after playing super-easy games like Skyrim (I died once) and Fallout 3 (never died) it probably put alot of people off.

The movement and combat, and the look of city when the infection took over was really great; but I'll wait til 2's price drops before picking it up.

The graphics are definitely dated looking now if they weren't before. I agree about the difficulty, though. That game is my "proudest" platinum trophy.

Thanks for the review. I tried getting into Prototype but put it back down pretty quickly. Maybe I'll give it another try, but I'm enjoying inFamous right now, it seems far more accessible than Prototype was. (Damn, did I just use a marketing buzzword?)

Meh. This one had been on my list of things to get, but I was waiting for the PC version. Good thing too - everything I've seen indicates it's a total waste. Prototype had a very interesting subtext going on with Zeus, and the sequel had huge potential for a very cool plot.

Instead they turned Zeus into generic card-carrying villain, and managed to introduce a protagonist who's even less likable then it was. Completely junked the 'virus growing a conscience' subtext from the first one, and put out a juvenile revenge fantasy.

What a waste.

I for one loved that Hulk game, so I certainly won't be complaining about seeing it reskinned and called Prototype. ;)

I played some more over the weekend.

I made it to the second burrough, played roughly 4-6 hours and it's still an incredibly fun game. The side stuff is varied, and a pleasure to participate in. Ability/bonuses continue to unlock at a steady & comfortable pace. It' just a joy to jump around at impossible heights & streak around the cities. I never ever want to fast-travel because I feel like I'd be missing out.

The dialog continues to be annoyingly crass, the conversations drab and the story thin. However it doesn't really matter because I'm not playing it for the story. :)

Great to hear. I'm pretty much getting it for sure now :p. I didn't care about/for the story in P1 as it was, so P2 having a crappy story doesn't matter to me.

Finished this game the other day, I really liked it. I was one of the few that enjoyed the original Prototype, so I wasn’t too surprised I liked this one. It was in a lot of ways a rehash of the first one, with a different character. Of course that I felt was one of the flaws in the game. In the first game you had a clearer idea on what was going on. In this one suddenly our hero from the first game is the villain in this one, which is fine, but I didn’t feel like I really understood what he was up to.

The biggest issue I had with this game is it isn’t complete. The challenges aren’t all there. I really don’t get why someone would release a game with over half the challenges locked. They’re not even available via DLC. All you get is the date they will become available in the marketplaces. There’s also an achievement that is unlocked when you upgrade Heller all the way. I’m not sure if these missing challenges effect that award. When you complete that set of challenges you get an upgrade, and they’re all listed in Heller’s character sheet. If nothing else it’s really hard to level all the way up when you’re missing a ton of available points.

They know their target demographic it seems. Uneducated Kids cussing on XBL with zero tech knowledge. :D

I have not been excited about this one, but I'll grab it when it hits a fair price.
