Protests in Gaza

37 dead people killed and 1300 people wounded during a protest.
A lot of people will stop caring once they hear the word Palestinian.

From BBC http://www.bbc.com/news/world-middle-east-44104599
What is going on in Gaza?
Palestinians have held weekly protests there in the run-up to their annual commemoration of what they call the Nakba or Catastrophe, when hundreds of thousands of their people fled their homes or were displaced following the foundation of the Israeli state on 14 May, 1948.

Scores of Palestinians have been killed since the protests began. Thousands more have been wounded.

Hamas, which is in a state of conflict with Israel, had said it would step up protests in the lead-up to Tuesday, the official Nakba commemoration.

It says it wants to draw attention to what Palestinians insist is their right to return to ancestral homes in what became Israel.

"Today is the big day when we will cross the fence and tell Israel and the world we will not accept being occupied forever," a science teacher in Gaza, Ali, told Reuters news agency.

Why is the embassy move so controversial?
The status of Jerusalem goes to the heart of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
Israeli sovereignty over Jerusalem is not recognised internationally and, according to the 1993 Israel-Palestinian peace accords, the final status of Jerusalem is meant to be discussed in the latter stages of peace talks.
Israel has occupied East Jerusalem since the 1967 Middle East war. It effectively annexed the sector, though this was not recognised by any countries until Mr Trump's declaration in December 2017.

...
Since 1967, Israel has built a dozen settlements, home to about 200,000 Jews, in East Jerusalem. These are considered illegal under international law, although Israel disputes this.

From WP
The opening of the embassy on Monday is followed by Nakba Day on Tuesday — when Palestinians mark the anniversary of mass expulsions and flight that displaced an estimated 700,000 people when Israel was founded 70 years ago.
...
But they are expected to be largest in Gaza, where six weeks of demonstrations dubbed the “March of Return” will reach a climax this week. Before Monday, Israeli snipers already killed nearly 50 Palestinians in the unrest at the fence, according to the Gaza Health Ministry, and shot 2,240 more.

A whole bunch of people with nothing to lose living on a tiny strip of land. It's a pressure cooker.

I doubt we'll see much improvement over the next 20 years to be honest. Israel is completely unwilling and the US will veto everything Israel doesn't like.

Now that we’ve given Israel everything it asked for without getting anything in return they sure seem to be behaving a lot better.

It would be nice if Trump could find a way not to get rolled by even one international actor. Just one would be great.

There will be no peace in the Middle East until Israel is removed or they become so strong that none of their neighboring countries would dare touch them. Even then, there will be constant conflict between the arabic countries there, with or without Israel.

To be fair, Trump is getting tons of praise and accolades from a "powerful and important man" in Netanyahu - so he's getting exactly what he wants and desires in return. Other world leaders have figured out how he works (see Korea).

We just need to stop forgetting that Trump isn't there to get things in return for America or Americans, but rather for himself. Then it's fairly clear.

Define "so strong". They already have nukes - estimated at 400 making them #3 in the world. Not too bad for a country the size of New Jersey.

Nukes are just deterrence against other nukes, no one will use nukes unless facing their own annihilation. But I believe "so strong" would be like US Military Power vs a country like Iraq, where they would have full no contest domination if conflict erupted and would steam roll that country. I don't believe Israel is there at this point and will ever get there without US support.

Israel has declared open season on Palestinian protesters--live fire against teens armed with rocks. Thanks Trump, I'm sure today's events will help curb more Islamic extremism and diffuse the blind hatred of America for the next 30 years.

I can't just blame Trump for this. Why is it that whenever neocons get anywhere near an Administration (Republican or Democrat) they just can't help tripping over their own dicks in the Middle East??? When will America ever learn that throwing blind support to the lesser of 2 evils...is still EVIL??

With the internationally non-sanctioned, unpopular opening of the US embassy in Jerusalem today, deaths seem to be climbing by the minute. There were 21 confirmed deaths when I last heard the news about it, maybe 15 minutes ago. It's currently ~37, according to Haaretz and CNN

Who knew that it was going to be this bad? I guess this is the only way to achieve peace, eh?

I guess it's a small price to pay for Trump keeping an ill-considered campaign promise. Not to mention fulfilling a Biblical prophecy.

Unwilling to do what?

Payback for fundy support.

They can't figure out just because you can do something doesn't mean you should.

Now at 52 dead and 1200 injured.

Don't worry though, Trump saved a $1B on the new embassy.

Oh wait, we're just making some updates to an office building for a temporary solution but we're still going to spend $1B on a brand new complex.

Orange fucker can never tell the truth.

It's remarkable to watch the smiling and clapping (especially of prominent Americans) at the ceremony juxtaposed with open violence being perpetrated by Israel against protesters on network split screen.

A real leader would have said we'll move the embassy if you promise to stop using live ammo against people throwing rocks. Or try to at least cut down on the number of illegal settlements. Instead we got nothing except Dump's ego stroked.

I wait for the day we get a prez that just stops supporting Israel completely. Won't happen in my lifetime but one can hope.
