Dear Friend,

I am writing to you to ask that you join us in an internet organized protest and boycott. A number of stores have threatened litigation under the DMCA (1998 Digital Millennium Copyright Act) to a number of consumer websites that had posted the sale prices on some of their future print ads.
According to Cindy Cohn, legal director for the Electronic Frontier Foundation, the incident is a "clear misuse" of the law. "You can't copyright facts. How much something costs is not expression," said Cohn. "The DMCA is the wrong process to use here."
However, the threat of costly litigation has forced the consumer websited to comply as they do not have the resources to question the validity of the corporate claims.
What we can do is boycott these stores on Black Friday - the day after thanksgiving (November 29):

Wal*Mart
Target
Best Buy
Staples
Office Max
Jo-Ann Stores Inc.

Also, please forward this email to as many of your friends that you can so that we can collectively and financially tell the big corporations that the misuse of the DMCA and a threat to our rights of free speech will not be tolerated. What harm is there in sharing what is in an ad that is coming out in the newspapers anyway?

Thanks for your support. If you want to read more in detail about the origins of this protest, you can read about it here:

Sincerely,

Your Friend.

Edit: Spread this around!

LOL wtf is a Jo-Ann Store? Black Friday and DMCA sounds so sinister together!!

I will NOT be boycotting...instead I'll do what I've been doing every Thanksgiving prior to 2000. Checking out the circulars on Thursday, goin to bed early, waking up early Friday, checkin out more circulars, circling what I want, and heading off to shop.

If you DO decide to boycott...be sure not to miss out on those order-online-instore-pickup deals!

Don't waste your time boycotting, it won't hurt the retailers. I work for one of the named retailers and I hate this whole stupid ad thing too.

This is pure censorship no matter how you look it, and it only gets worse. This is a clear example of a retail chain showing its true colors. It's such a shame for them to do this, especially when the economy is hurting, very bad business!! :(

Don't they realize people posting these ads are helping them.

I for one, will avoid "Wal*Mart,Target,Best Buy,Staples,Office Max,Jo-Ann Stores Inc." until they make a public apology for this stupidity. These stores are on my "BLACK" list now.

The Digital Millennium Copyright Act wasnt designed to copyright items to be on sale in a week or two. I really hate it when people voilate the first admendment. Free speech is just that, free, dont tell me what i can and cannot read, or see
:(

Until you are directly affected by losing your job or thrown in jail you may call others fools. Do you also call the original Colonists that protested the Tyranny of the British Government fools too?

Evadman from here on AT was treated unfairly and fired back in August of this year by Home Depot for posting here about Clearance items
rolleye.gif
. He is now being interviewed by The Wall Street Journal since this issue has come to a head because of the "Black Friday" ads.

Mods, maybe sticky this as an AT member is directly involved and it has National and Worldwide implications since they are using the DMCA and saying it is a Copyright issue making posting on a Forum a crime? :Q :frown: :|
