Prostate Cancer. Man.

In 2002 my dad had a radical prostatectomy to remove an extremely early form of prostate cancer. His PSA numbers went from (I believe) slightly below 10 to zero.

It stayed that way for about four years and eight months - then the PSA numbers started to creep up slowly. Very slowly. In the tenths - one tenth here, another here. He had a bone scan last year that came up negative - since then though, his PSA numbers have jumped to .42.

Has anyone had experience with this? I only ask because I'm a little afraid and would really like to not go through the cancer experience with him again. Once was enough.

Man, that's not a cancer I would want.

I sincerely hope your Dad beats this.

Well, that's the thing - he already did. PSA is a "prostate specific antigen" and as my biological knowledge of the subject is lacking - I simply know that higher = bad.

Now, if one didn't HAVE a prostate, in theory, there would be no PSA at all - which was the case for almost five years. It could be errant cells, it could be nothing at all.

Take comfort from the fact they're wathing it now and they know what to look for. My dad had two ops and several rounds of nasty radiotherapy last year and is apparently clear now but it's early days. I trust the docs.

My dad had it too. had radiation treatments and is in remission. as far as a know, he's still doing good. My mother, not so much. Alzheimer's.
