Psychosylph, kaymack and others who have the SB61G2s...

I'm thinking about getting this model. Have you guys run into variations of the sound "buzzing" problem? If so, how did you correct it?

No, I haven't, but I have heard that it is only a problem with the front ouputs - which I don't use. There is a thread on sfftech.com detailing that it has to do with the ports not being properly isolated and how to alleviate that problem.

I have run into the problem with 9700/9500 cards conflicting with the onboard sound, though...

BTW, if you decide to do it, I have an extra at the moment...

I haven't encountered the sound problems yet. The early SB61G2's had a motherboard flaw (capacitors as I recall) that caused the on-board sound to break up, drop out etc. There was a Shuttle RMA set up to fix the problem for anyone willing to ship their box back. The problem was corrected for later (starting in Aug.2003??) SB61G2's and is apparently fixed on those currently shipped. I guess it is possible to end up with one of the early releases if you buy it at a small shop where the inventory just sits around. Those from volume sellers, Newegg, ExcaliberPC, etc should be the corrected model by now.
The other problem that Psycho mentioned has to do with a grounding issue for the front outputs (I'm not using them either), and there is an inexpensive do-it-yourself permanent fix posted on the SFFTech XPC Forum.
For general use, the on-board sound (Realtek) is basic and probably sufficient. If the focus of your system is music, especially through headphones and/or you are an audiophile, you would do well to pop a sound card into the PCI slot.
All in all, I have been pleased with my 20th Anniversary Edition for the month that it has been running (crosses fingers here).

wow, i really had no idea just how small this thing really is. very impressive. and everything fits in just nicely. the only thing that isn't perfect is that my audigy 2 card is just slightly twisted because of the rubber piece keeping it from hitting the drive cage. but even that is minor. very cool (this is my first post from the new and improved deadbox!).

thanks for all the info and input guys, very happy with my purchase. i think tho i may order one of the new side/top pieces that have the mesh in them, seems my r9700 might breathe better that way.

I just got my SN85G4 yesterday (Athlon64 system). This thing is pretty cool. It's a lot quieter than I thought it would be, although I haven't really pushed it too hard yet. When putting all the stuff in, I was shocked at how cramped the insides are. Once its together it seems to work fine though. Fisher - I had the same problem putting an Audigy 2 in to this one, it has to twist slightly to fit in. Overall I'm very pleased with it and it looks really slick.

Just got myself setup on a SN45G and I  this thing to death... I should have gotten one sooner! No more huge towers taking up unnecessary space... i mean i had an abit nf7-s and all, but only the AGP slot was occupied. I understand this thing has only 1 PCI as expansion but it doesnt seem like a problem to me with USB2 ports and firewire...

That Sunon fan on the ICE running at full blast is a nigghtmare though... no way I could sleep with that jet engine on at night, lol
Use Speedfan to turn that sucka down a notch or two.

edit: if you're considering the SN45G, I'd try to track down one with a FN45 rev 1.0 mobo
