depends..prescott based, or cedar mill based? Prescotts run very hot, so if you plan to overclock you need very good cooling. I don't see any reason to get the single core over the dual core. Just make sure you get a 930 and not an 830.

do NOT get a p4prescott. mine idled at 50c with stock cooling lol. and p4's throttle down like crazy when they heat up past 50-55c. even with scythe ninja and nexus it idled at 45c in a 70c room temp. go for the pentium d

70c room temp? where do you live, purgatory?

anyway, Pentium D definitely, especially if it's a 9xx model.

I'm more interested in how air cooling was used to drop the temp of the chip below ambient...

That or how did the typo happen.

He probably meant 70F ambient.

the p4 3.0 ghz is a single core processor with hyper threading. The P4's are split into prescotts and cedar mills. The cedar mill are the chips with the code name 6x1 and they are madeonthe 65nm process. Thus they consume less power and generate less heat.
But i would never tell u to get a single core chip now.Cause programs and games are getting multithreaded slowly.
And thats where dual core shines.
The best buy right now would be a pentium d 930 3.0ghz at $190.

Right...which is why my 920@4.0Ghz runs 2x Folding@Home instances at 63-65°C all day long without any hickups and my previous P4 Prescott 660@4.01Ghz ran at temps comparable to my Pentium D 920. The 920@4.0Ghz can get up to 70°C if you keep the Folding@Home instances on and play Oblivion and it still runs fine (read: without any throttling) at that temp. Admittedly the 70°C is pushing the limits of the thermal design specs, but 55°C isn't anywhere near throttling.
