Why the hell is Anandtech Off Topic the place that everyone asks every goddamn question that pops into their head instead of looking into it on their own, or finding a more appropriate channel to ask their stupid questions?

well i figure that there are a lot of people on this board and maybe they have something to contribute in a positive way (no matter what their stance is). by no means am i going to make my decision based on this thread, however, i will use it as supporting evidence to either side.

thanks though i appreciate your comments - no joke either.

'joing'

Please use your time in college wisely and take an english course 🙂

Speaking from experience with the frats at UMCP (friends are in and currently pledging frats right now), you will drink and party alot if you live in the house. It takes up a lot of your time, so be ready for it.

I met with and slept with a new woman about every month for 4 years of college.
4 x 12 ...you do the math.

I am a brother at Phi Kappa Tau

Pros:
meet people
campus activities
group sports
parties

Cons:
dues (they go to pay for parties and stuff though so it's not really an issue)

Join Alpha Phi Omega, you can sleep with all the chicks you want.

Were you in A-Phi-O?

No, I have tons of friends who joined. I didn't have time to do it, but I "helped" with some of their projects.

what about later on in life ... liek after college? im having a real good time right in college w/o being in a frat, but i know thast at some point i will want to be part of something. usually for me it has been playing college lacrosse but that might not work out

Can get a group of the guys together and play some pickup lacrosse if you want.

When I graduated, one of the Brothers got me a job. So that's another bonus. And some of them are laywers which helped us when we got evicted because our landlord didnt bring the house up to fire code.

Yeah, first fix the "joing"..................

Anyway, I joined a frat during my freshman year. I was a little reluctant about it at first, but turned out to be one of the better decisions I made during college. I lived in the house for 2 1/2 years, which had better accomodations and was cheaper than living on campus (or finding a place with some friends). I had so much fun while I lived there. Always someone around to hang out with, study with or get wasted on a tuesday with (hey, it is college).

Cons.................dues. Dues suck. And then there are the stereotypical associations that go along with joining a fraternity. Also when someone from your frat does something really stupid, it kind of labels the whole group.

But in the end, who gives a sh!t?? Go do what you want and have a great time. Just make sure you get all of your work done.

I'm in a frat at U of I, which hosts the largest greek system.

Pro's: always stuff to do, have fun, mad drinking, great parties

Con's: could be expensive, have to deal with many immature idiots, always dirty, takes up a lot of time, a lot of bs

During my freshman year it was really fun and I loved it. I would just drink almost every night and not do any school work. Then after I got my grades, I did no drinking and had to go to the library all the time to do any real work. Now that I'm not into drinking until I pass out, I don't like the frat life so much. Our house is falling apart, dirty, and about to go bankrupt so we all get screwed constantly.

It always amazes me to find people in the greek system that still call them "frats". We were taught on our first day about how that is considered disrespectful.

Anyway, I am in Pi Kappa Alpha at Drexel. The experience has been almost all positive. The only negatives are dues, but even they come back to you, for example, we have two formals a year, a dance hall, open bar, transportation, etc, and we only pay $30/person, $60/couple. We also get a beach house for a week in the summer, all we have to pay is $20 additional, and that covers the house, food, etc. Not a bad deal. The other negative is the stereotype you have to deal with...people outside the fraternity system tend to think we're all assholes who do nothing but drink and rape girls.

I think Animal House was based on the hijinks of the writers of the movie at Cornell in the early 60's. You should find out which one they were in and join that one.
