Pros and cons of dorming?

For those of you who dorm, what are the pros and cons of it? Do you recommend it? How is UCR or UCI for dormitory?

It depends. If you don't have any friends or have a hard time making them, the dorms might be for you. At the very least, you'll probably become friends with your roommate and maybe some of the other freshmen in the dorm.

Me, I got out of the dorms ASAP. It was cheaper for me to live off campus.

meet people fast. dont really have to clean

its small tho

we have to live in dorms at my school. ONLY about 30% live off campus and its only seniors and you have to apply and be approved to get off campus

glas i got ihnto a special intrest house this year. not technicially off campus. but its a house not attached to anything

Pros: Terrific place to socialize, and consequently terrific way to get laid. Very convienent, and may help you academically if you tend to like to study in groups.

Cons: Somewhat costly. Limited personal space. Might be unlucky and get surrounded by a bunch of tards.

Just live at home like me.. no need to do laundry, make meals, wash dishes, clean the house, etc.

But if you get <100% on ANYTHING, you're in for some beats. 🙁

Cons: Small, noisy, smelly, no kitchen, no private bathroom, a roommate in the same room, annoying alcoholics, hot in the summer, cold in the winter, no running water close by, no parking close by, ....

Pros: None

Dorms are nice, its rather easy to manage your stuff, since theres less domestic issue junk to take care of. Cons? roommate, really. thats about it, but I didn't have anything really valuable, and my roommate had his valuable junk, too. we trusted each other, so everything was fine.

I dormed this year and I"m glad I did.

Roommates are all good. They're all laid back and clean. Non of them smoke. No bad habits. Does the dishes.

We don't have a meal plan since we got a kitchen.

I put in my 2 years of dorm life before moving off-campus...and I'm really glad I did. You'll make a ton of friends, and it'll pay off once you move off-campus.

it depends on where you're dorming... check out the school websites to see what type of dorms they offer.

some have community bathrooms, which you wouldnt have to clean, but others share a bathroom with people next door which you have to clean..

some dorms have kitchens on the floor with a stove/oven/microwave... others dont and are strict about what you can have..

i love dorming cuz i dont like driving. i've had some difficult roommates, but i really get along with my roommate this year! i think it's best to have a roommate who isnt your friend, but your roommate... when you're friends - things get complicated.

room temperature... it's hot here all year round.. no AC in the hot days, but the heat is on full blast in the winter.. we leave the window open at least a crack all the time.

i guess that's it

I'm glad I dormed the first year.

However, I would NEVER do it again if I had the opportunity of dorming again.

I love it, but you have to get into a decent dorm. My first semester I was in a single room dorm with public bathrooms shower, it blew

Now I have a suite with two bathrooms and a huge shower, decent sized living room, and the bedroom isn't shoddy at all.

(I went to uci)

Pros - nice rooms (not the largest rooms, but in Mesa Court its all suite styled and really nice)
people to meet (this is a gamble since you can get paired up or suite'd up with bastards that don't know any manners)
food, classes, everything is pretty much walking distance...a block to some restaurants, fast food, etc
just simple "hall" (what we call the buildings) pride...go egg another hall, challenge them to football/bball/foosball etc...

Cons- small rooms
not much to do after the first 2 months or so
cleaning people come at the middle of the day when you just woke up and gotta get ready for class
no tv (no cable in mesa court, pretty crappy reception w/out antennae...but you hardly watch TV unless its like "american idol night/smallville night/friends night/laker playoffs")

and just other things like who you meet, who you have as an RA(the older kids that setup things, enforce rules.etc...)

but I dormed my freshman year and it was great...met my current roommates in my old dorm as well as other kids who i see on a daily/weekly basis...

Pros: great only for first year to meet people
Cons: costly, no privacy
Bottomline: Stay in after the first year only if you're dorming with really nice ppl. Esle, save the $ and learn to be independent

I know some people there 🙂

if you dont dorm you're not going to college. you're just going to an easier version of high school.

live in the dorms. end of story.

Did you go to community college?

no. 4-year. i mean easier in that you only have to be in class maybe 3-4 hours per day vs. 7-8 for HS.

oh, but i should mention im a humanities major. so college is much easier than HS cuz you only have to study two weeks a year (for the midterm and the final) 😛

Your in UMass Lowell?? Cool..two of my uncles used to go there. Wasn't that place known for shootings and stuff..and recently got better? I was there a few years ago.

Pro: Its better in almost every aspect. DO IT(freshman year) OR YOU WILL REGRET IT!
Con: I guess the food isn't as good, but you get used to it...
