In Gate's case, he has far exceeded what he would give away in taxes.

As for Paul Allen, I'm of the impression that he is personally involved with a couple causes and gives a lot of his time vs. just cutting checks from behind a desk. Maybe I'm misinformed...

And look at the stingy Walmart Family, worth $94 billion and have only given approx. $1 billion to charity. Woohoo!

Although, just thinking, if you consider what has been given to charitable causes just among the top 100 philanthropists over the last 20 years, great googly moogly! Not counting what is given by the average joe.

Where does it all go? There just seems to be so much need out there...considering what the government contributes + all the charitable giving, there still seems to be no shortage of needy causes.
