You're = You are.

"Your" is a pronoun showing possession. "Is that your computer?" You wouldn't say: Is that you are computer?

While I'm at it: "Past" is time. "Passed" is a verb, shows action. "In the past hour, Peter and Rattledagger passed me in DC project X." Really though, everyone here does good nuff soes we kin unnerstan dem :p

Back on topic: Thanks Peter :)

And thanks to the friendly, helpful admin/mod :D

Nice test. I would probably pass:
No problems with geography, grammer, arithmetic.
I do not know about orthography: I know the answers for 1, 2,3, 6, 7, and 9; and the US history exam - but I know the answers for questions 2, 3, 4, 6 and 7.
I like the geography question #3: "Of what use are rivers? Of what use is the ocean? ": I do not think that the answer: "to dump trash into" would be counted as correct!

One advantage of having lived in the US as a foreigner for more than 5 years, being over 50 years of age and having had to pass a test in american language, history and knowledge of american culture (Edit: there were - among others - questions in that test about Elvis, Dolly Parton, Luis Armstrong and the Rolling Stones).

Dreadful. :p
Grammar & Orthography, mostly blank.
Arithmetic, having no idea how much bushels, lbs and so on is, can't answer most of them.
History & Geography, hmm, can likely answer a couple of them...

... but, to be "correct" according to 1895 is more doubtful....

Hmm, a quick search gave the solution, but some of the answers didn't make me any wiser.

Example, among the European republics, you've got Britain and Sweden...

Hmmmm, the question about European republics in 1895 ... there were not many: France, Iceland, Switzerland, the city stares of Genova, Pisa and Venice.
Most were monarchies: the great Habsburg-Monarchy, the Brittish Empire, Sweden-Norway (which at that time were a union), Russia (with Finland and the baltic states), Prussia, The German Empire, Spain, Italy, Portugal, Poland. Others were principalities: Andorra, Lichtenstein, Monaco, and a few others ...

The definition of a republic is - in this case - that it is not a heriditary monarchy or principality, that the head of state is elected by some kind of electoral body...

But we are way off topic - interesting as it is ... so, if you all don't mind, back on topic?

I have not yet heard from the Anandtech mods ... :(

I hope we can get this up soon. Seems like some current crunchers are starting to get discouraged and move to other projects... :(

Here is the response from the admin to our proposal for a recruitment thread.
I think it is OK.
In this copy the links are not included - but they exist and refer/link to the right sites.
Shall we go with this?

In this version, I corrected some spelling and punctuation, deleted some redundant statements and added some creative text that came to mind as possible contributions. I hope I did not lose any of your meaning or any of the impact of your draft. Of course, I have your original version so it will be no problem to restore, edit or update any of your text to the above.

Here ya go...

Topic Title: ~~ TeAm AnandTech Distributed Computing needs YOU! Shameless Recruiting Thread ~~

Topic Summary: Your chance to give and to get something for nothing... really!

---

TeAm AnandTech invites you to join us and use your computer's otherwise idle CPU cycles to further research projects in many fields.

What do you give? Nothing! Distributed computing projects don't interfere with your work or even slow down your computer. They run in the background to harness the clock spare cycles your computer is already spending while running your programs.

What do you get? The sky is NOT the limit; it's just the beginning! TeAm AnandTech is engaged in Distributed Computing projects ranging from seeking the causes and cures for diseases to studying phenomena in the vastness of the universe.

TeAm AnandTech is a very close knit group of people... from all backgrounds and societies... all working and playing together on various DC projects. We believe our Distributed Computing forum is among the most friendly and helpful places on the AnandTech forums. Add that to the great team spirit, and you've got a winning combination!

But wait! There's more! When you join the TeAm, you'll feel great because you and your computer will be contributing to worthwhile causes, and you will become a part of a truly great Family.

You'll find info on our various projects in the Distributed Computing welcome thread and the Comprehensice BOINC project list. Most projects are very easy to set up and run, don't need a permanent internet-connection while running and don't require 24 hour/day operation (but once addicted, you may just do that). They have almost no effect on your machine's everyday operations. If you have a question, please jump over to the Distributed Computing Forum and ask ... Or just say hello. You'll be glad you did, and we will, too!

Many of the other teams in the world have grown, while we've slowed down, but YOU can help change the trend. All of our teams really need more teammates, and some projects TeAm Anandtech projects need crunchers more than in others:

DPAD: The race is on, but TeAm AnandTech has fallen from 2nd rank to third, and we need more members in the team and turn things around! Please look here: DPAD Distributed Particle Accelerator Design: Here you can use your own PC's idle time to simulate and design parts of a particle accelerator. Please put the characters [TA] before your name, and you are in.

Folding@home: Several teams threaten TeAm AnandTechs position. Proteins are biology's workhorses - its nanomachines. Before proteins can carry out these important functions, they fold themselves. The process of protein folding, in many ways, remains a mystery. When proteins do not fold correctly, there can be serious consequences, including many well known diseases (e.g. Alzheimers, Cancer, Huntington's disease, Parkinson's disease). Please join the TeAm #198!

Rosetta@home One of the main projects for the TeAm. Some TeAm members have been inspired to crunch this project to help a small girl to fight cancer and to do something - not only for her - but also for humanity. Please look here: Rosetta@home needs your help to determine the 3-dimensional shapes of proteins in research that may ultimately lead to finding cures for some major human diseases. Here is the Rosetta@home TeAm-page!

SETI@home: One of the main projects for TeAm Anandtech! The TeAm is in 18th place, but 4 teams are a threat. Production has been falling over the past months as crunchers have moved to other projects. Some other teams are catching up! Please look here: SETI@home Search for ExtraTerrestial Intelligence: the project which started it all. The TeAm-page @ SETI@home is here.

Please join us! If you have any questions, comments or want to say hello, please post in the Recruitment thread @ Distributed Computing!

Hmm, two words should be switched:

Thanks Rattledagger. A fine example of me not reading what is there but what I want to see! ;)

I'll get that changed!

@keeleysam: It is so in the real version - but "bold" does not copy well into a post ...

How about itallic, as not to be too overpowering?

Also, don't use contractions like I just did. :p

"Distributed computing projects don't interfere with your work or even slow down your computer."

Change "don't" to "do not". When trying to get your point across, contractions are a bad thing. ;)

Edit: There should also be a comma between "your work, or even slow down..."

Here is my response to the moderators:

Thanks for the edit.
I'd like to propose the following changes:

1. change the order of words from "clock spare cycles" to:
What do you give? Nothing! Distributed computing projects do not interfere with your work, or even slow down your computer. They run in the background to harness the spare clock cycles your computer is already spending while running your programs.

2. clean up some wording by removing the word "projects" in front of TeAm AnandTech:
Many of the other teams in the world have grown, while we've slowed down, but YOU can help change the trend. All of our teams really need more teammates, and some projects TeAm Anandtech projects need crunchers more than in others:

3. There is one more spelling mistake: ... the Comprehensice BOINC project list... should be changed to ... the Comprehensive BOINC project list...

4. In this paragraph, please remove the unnecessay sentence "Please look here":
Rosetta@home One of the main projects for the TeAm. Some TeAm members have been inspired to crunch this project to help a small girl to fight cancer and to do something - not only for her - but also for humanity. Please look here: Rosetta@home needs your help to determine the 3-dimensional shapes of proteins in research that may ultimately lead to finding cures for some major human diseases. Here is the Rosetta@home TeAm-page!

When this is done, please publish this post.
Thanks for your help! We appreciate your help very much.

Peter

Please observe that I have not copied in the links and formatting (bold, italic, etc) just the wording. Now the post is done and will - as soon as the moderator has time - be published.
