You're = You are.

"Your" is a pronoun showing possession. "Is that your computer?" You wouldn't say: Is that you are computer?

While I'm at it: "Past" is time. "Passed" is a verb, shows action. "In the past hour, Peter and Rattledagger passed me in DC project X." Really though, everyone here does good nuff soes we kin unnerstan dem

4. What are the principal parts of a verb? Give principal parts of "lie,""play," and "run."

Orthography (Time, one hour)

1. What is meant by the following: alphabet, phonetic, orthography, etymology, syllabication
2. What are elementary sounds? How classified?
3. What are the following, and give examples of each: trigraph, subvocals, diphthong, cognate letters, linguals
4. Give four substitutes for caret 'u.'
5. Give two rules for spelling words with final 'e.' Name two exceptions under each rule.
6. Give two uses of silent letters in spelling. Illustrate each.
7. Define the following prefixes and use in connection with a word: bi, dis, mis, pre, semi, post, non, inter, mono, sup.
8 Mark diacritically and divide into syllables the following, and name the sign that indicates the sound: card, ball, mercy, sir, odd, cell, rise, blood, fare, last.

Geography (Time, one hour)

2. How do you account for the extremes of climate in Kansas?
3. Of what use are rivers? Of what use is the ocean?
4. Describe the mountains of North America
5. Name and describe the following: Monrovia, Odessa, Denver, Manitoba, Hecla, Yukon, St. Helena, Juan Fernandez, Aspinwall and Orinoco.
6. Name and locate the principal trade centers of the U.S.
7. Name all the republics of Europe and give the capital of each.
8. Why is the Atlantic Coast colder than the Pacific in the same latitude?
9. Describe the process by which the water of the ocean returns to the sources of rivers.
10. Describe the movements of the earth. Give the inclination of the earth.

Nice test. I would probably pass:
No problems with geography, grammer, arithmetic.
I do not know about orthography: I know the answers for 1, 2,3, 6, 7, and 9; and the US history exam - but I know the answers for questions 2, 3, 4, 6 and 7.
I like the geography question #3: "Of what use are rivers? Of what use is the ocean? ": I do not think that the answer: "to dump trash into" would be counted as correct!

One advantage of having lived in the US as a foreigner for more than 5 years, being over 50 years of age and having had to pass a test in american language, history and knowledge of american culture (Edit: there were - among others - questions in that test about Elvis, Dolly Parton, Luis Armstrong and the Rolling Stones).

Dreadful.

Hmm, a quick search gave the solution, but some of the answers didn't make me any wiser.

Example, among the European republics, you've got Britain and Sweden...

Hmmmm, the question about European republics in 1895 ... there were not many: France, Iceland, Switzerland, the city stares of Genova, Pisa and Venice.
Most were monarchies: the great Habsburg-Monarchy, the Brittish Empire, Sweden-Norway (which at that time were a union), Russia (with Finland and the baltic states), Prussia, The German Empire, Spain, Italy, Portugal, Poland. Others were principalities: Andorra, Lichtenstein, Monaco, and a few others ...

The definition of a republic is - in this case - that it is not a heriditary monarchy or principality, that the head of state is elected by some kind of electoral body...

But we are way off topic - interesting as it is ... so, if you all don't mind, back on topic?

I have not yet heard from the Anandtech mods ...

Change "don't" to "do not". When trying to get your point across, contractions are a bad thing.

Edit: There should also be a comma between "your work, or even slow down..."
