Properly setting up two wired NetGear N300 WNR2000's

I'm trying to add wireless internet to my basement so I bought a second net gear n300 wnr2000 router. I connected them with an ethernet cable from the lan port #1 on the main router to the internet port on the new one. I ran the auto setup on the new router which gave me internet but I want to make sure its setup properly. Here are a few things I want to make sure are correct. First, I can only log into the main router. If i type in the address of the second router it does not connect to the setup menu. The main router is 192.168.1.1 and i set the second one to 192.168.1.8 during the setup. Is that correct? And under Wireless Settings I have the channels set to auto. Is that correct? Any advice/tips will be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

You set it up wrong. If you just want to extend your wireless range, then you want to connect a LAN port to a LAN port, not the internet port. If you connect the internet port of the 2nd router to the LAN port of the first router, than the other computers connected to the second router will be on a seperate subnet than the first router, and will not be able to talk to each other, although they both should be able to access the internet.

Connect LAN port to LAN port, and disable DHCP on the second router. Set the wireless SSID to the same and the WPA2 password to be the same on both. Set the local LAN IP of the secondary router to be 1 different from the main internet router. Like 192.168.1.2, where the original main router is 192.168.1.1.

Thanks for the help! I switched the ethernet so it goes from Lan to Lan port. I still cant figure out how to log into the second router though.

Figured it out.. there was a laptop left on upstairs that was using the 192.168.1.2 IP so it was conflicting with the new router. Shut down the laptop and I was able to log into the second router and properly set it up. Thanks for the help!
