Proper way to remove flash cards and usb drives??

What is the proper way to remove a usb device and flash card?

I have several sdhc flash cards I use to back up files and several usb memory flash drives that are used for backup and storage.

What is the proper way to remove them from a pc or laptop?
I have seen people plug them in and then physically remove them.

When I remove the flash card or usb card I click on the button in the task bar to remove the memory.

Will just physically removing the flash card or drive do any harm?
Thanks

A flash drive/pen drive/thumb drive can be removed any time and plugged in anytime. They are not involved with write caching and as long as they are stable with no activity, they can be pulled out with no harm. Been doing it for years - several times a week. They just get dong-ding going in and a ding-gong coming out. This applies to XP, Vista, and Win 7 equally.

Outside chance if there's data being transferred at the time that you can corrupt some data on the flash media. 99.999% of the time you'll be fine. If you're worried about that .001%, which you may be since you asked the question in the first place, then continue to click the "safely remove hardware" button.

I do.

I always hit the "safely remove hardware" button. I know I don't have to, it just makes me rest easy
