Your cheap. You know us servers make 4.3x an hour. We rely on tips. I usually receive 25-30% tips. I tip 30%. You prolly send your food back 4 times, god only knows what you've consumed. :X

Why should we pay someone extra for doing their job? It's not my fault your industry fucked you and you all started relying on money that you weren't entitled to. Go above and beyond, get paid above and beyond. Provide sub-par service and you'll be paid accordingly.

Or find a new job; there's always that.

Don't ask me...I'm not one of those people who believe in such nonsense.

My friend delivered pizzas, so I used to meet him at his job once in a while and observe what went on there.

It's not nonsense, believe me. After a few complaints from the delivery guys no wanting to deliver to you, and the manager insisting somebody has to go, you'd better hope the person "stuck" with your delivery is having a hell of a good day.

whoever started this tipping thing should be shot. these people are already paid by their employer to do their job.

I've said this for a long time here on this board and got flamed beyond belief. People here seem to think that for some reason servers deserve a tip while people who do harder work in other service areas don't. I don't know why anyone would reward someone for doing the basic job that they're required to do. It's gotten to the point where servers demand a tip and won't work without getting one. Sad

this is nonsense. Would you rather pay $20 for a 15 dollar steak or $16 + whatever you feel is an appropriate compensation for the service you got?

the idea of tipping motivates the server to work for you and get it right.

I work in a restaurant (not as a server, thank god) in Florida, the minimum wage for servers is 4.25 and minimum wage for anything non tip based is 7.25. The establishment I work at, servers walk with anywhere between 14%-24% (this is beer and wine only, no liquor license)
Bonus for others, being a 2 store place, we are "mom and pop" so all other employees also get tips, 1% of what the place brings in a night. (I'm head chef/kitchen manager on salary, but I make up to $120 a night in tips) - not including my monthly bonus 🙂

They should get it right regardless. Should I tip the post office so they wont lose my mail? How about the dentist so they wont accidentally fuck up my teeth?

You're not helping the problem. I shouldn't even have to pay for my damn food if the server can't manage to bring it to me in a proper and timely manner (bar extenuating circumstances of course). You are paid to take my order, bring me my food, and check on me once in a while and see if I'm ok. That is what you are paid to do. That is ALL you are paid to do. Why do I have to pay you extra, out of my own pocket, after paying the restaurant what they're due, just so that you don't fuck up?

You can earn a GRATUITY (let's stop calling it tip, because people lost the point of the word) by going ABOVE AND BEYOND what your job entails. ABOVE. That means, being especially nice even when you're not in a good mood. That means not bothering me every three minutes when you know I'm alright just because you want to secure that gratuity. That means spending a couple minutes with me and help me find something I'd like to order if I'm having a hard time.

But continue to tip for average service, thereby perpetuating the problem. It's gotten so bad that servers feel entitled to gratuities for their shit work. How much worse will it get?

Tipping appears to be different over here, I'll tip whatever I want, if I want to, when I was in chicago, some moron complained at me for not tipping enough! I told her to go fuck herself and that I was disappointed I had tipped her at all if that was her attitude.

If service is GOOD I'll tip, if service is average I wont, if service is poor I'll leave a penny.

So is outrageous or high percentage tipping purely an American phenomenon?

Well, purely American and stupid/ rich people, the notions that "you should tip a certain amount" or that "you have to tip something" is not over this side of the water.

Depends on service and where I'm at. 15-25% depending on service.

I tend to tip more at bars/restaurants that I go to regularly. You just get better service when they know you tip well or the bar will buy you shots/beers.

Does vBulletin manipulate posts to make them all sound stupid or are you guys doing that on your own?

Tipping less than 50% is unacceptable, cheapasses.

Used to be a busboy and server, so I tend to over tip a bit. If you do your job to any expected standard, you're getting 20%. If you screw something up and fix it, you're getting 20% (maybe more depending on the circumstances even).

I can only think of 2 or 3 times when I actually left less than 15%:

- Breakfast at Scramblers: waitress took our drink order and then went on break. Showed up 30 minutes later with our drinks and then took our regular order. Food took another forever and was missing dishes, but she never checked back to find out. I hand-delivered a nice shiny penny to her, with store manager present, and explained that it covered the check and the tip. I've never been so pissed at a restaurant.

- Most recently I was having lunch at a relatively nice place near my work with my wife. Ordered soup and salmon. Salmon showed up late, soup showed up later. Explained to the waitress - who was dumber than a box of rocks - that the soup wasn't necessary since the idea was to eat it while waiting for the salmon. I asked that it just be removed from the bill. In our haste to get out of there, my wife handed over the CC without making sure the soup had been taken off (our mistake). When we got the card back I checked the bill, and wouldn't you know, it hadn't been taken off. I flagged down Debbie McDoubledees, but she said it was "really hard" to fix it at this point. "Well, it's really hard to tip you at this point, so I guess it all works out." She got this "sprung leak" look on her face, making the entire trip entirely worth it.

over here it's an entitlement these days.

It's not an entitlement, it's just customary that you pay a portion of your server's wage as an enticement for them to provide good service. Tipping is NOT an "if you feel like it" option. People who are adversed to tipping shouldn't put themselves in situations where they're expected to tip.
