So as anyone with a modern smartphone might have discovered, charging one of these things while on is trickier than you may think. Unless the data pins on the USB connection are shorted, the phone will think it's hooked up to a computer and charge with only 500mA, not the higher (up to 1000mA) current it will draw from a power-only connection. On top of that, not all the wall/car connectors will actually deliver 1A if the phone asks for it.
This isn't a huge problem when charging with the thing off or quite asleep, but it makes situations like driving and using GPS a giant pain.
I've seen discussions of this over a bunch of forums, but I don't know if people have settled on a couple of cheap (or not cheap) charger models (female USB or just directly to phone) that consistently deliver the goods: properly are seen as charge-only connections *and* deliver 1000mA to the phone. Both car and wall, of course.
