So as anyone with a modern smartphone might have discovered, charging one of these things while on is trickier than you may think. Unless the data pins on the USB connection are shorted, the phone will think it's hooked up to a computer and charge with only 500mA, not the higher (up to 1000mA) current it will draw from a power-only connection. On top of that, not all the wall/car connectors will actually deliver 1A if the phone asks for it.

This isn't a huge problem when charging with the thing off or quite asleep, but it makes situations like driving and using GPS a giant pain.

I've seen discussions of this over a bunch of forums, but I don't know if people have settled on a couple of cheap (or not cheap) charger models (female USB or just directly to phone) that consistently deliver the goods: properly are seen as charge-only connections *and* deliver 1000mA to the phone. Both car and wall, of course.

I bought one that was $8 w/ amazon prime. It's packaged as a t-mobile blackberry charger. Works great with an Evo.

i plug my phone into the charger and use the gps/ music all the time, it charges in about an hour or so usually. it gets hot, but i have put it on the charger with 20% battery and used the gps for a long drive home from a remote job site and had a full battery when i got back to the office. ive never really had any issues with it at all, in the truck or at home. i rarely turn my phone off (which is saying a lot, since it has winmo 6.1 hehe)

http://www.monoprice.com/products/p...082602&p_id=6766&seq=1&format=3#specification
Input Voltage 12-24 vdc
output voltage 5dc +-5%
Max output current 1000MA (1A)

$1.16 at monoprice.

I've tried that charger. I don't believe the phone actually gets 1000MA with this. Whenever I put my Droid on it and fired up Pandora, I would actually lose charge (albeit slowly) over the course of a drive. I tried three different ones and they all did the same thing.

I've since switched to this charger, which works great.

lol...only nerds would argue about this stuff.

I sold cell phones for years. There is no way I could begin to count the number of times I told customer they needed to use the proper charger/usb cord to make sure their devices worked properly and didn't void their warranty.

I use a $2 charger while I'm at work, the stock one to connect to my computer and another $2 one in my car. If there is a difference, I can't tell.

This one works GREAT. Works fine w/ my TP2, and also works with the newer iPhones/iPods

wait, THATS what triggers the higher amperage? the data lines just need to be shorted!?

thats awesome, because my custom cradle i built runs off a 5a 5v power supply hub, so i can feed my phone whatever amps it wants. i will try this trick and see if i can keep my wifi on while driving!

edit- seems to work. i went on a 10min drive and the power status actually went UP 1% with wifi on. usually with wifi on it would go down around 3% in 10 minutes.
