Proper method of applying thermal paste to CPU?

Back in the day when Arctic Silver first became popular, the "proper" method was applying a razor-thin layer to the CPU surface and putting on the heatsink without any twisting or turning during application.

What's currently considered the proper method of applying thermal paste?

depends on the paste. as5 recommends a small amount and mounting the HS. don't remember the stated amount. other are different

I've tried all the ways of putting thermal paste onto a cpu but I've noticed no difference in temps anything like that. What I do now is put a bit on the center and use a razor blade to smooth it out leaving a thin, even layer on the whole cpu.

Same here. If possibly I usually use a credit card (as rigid as possible) but usually end up just grabbing a few unactivated walmart gift cards every once in a while, those seem to work nicely.
