I have a wake to go to today, it is summer what is proper dress for a wake? I own a suit but feel it is to warm to that. Is dress pants and a pull over collared shirt appropriate?

I would go with suit if you are worried, worst case you leave coat in car.

Or just dress pants, shirt and tie with option to leave tie in car once you do some recon and see some other people walk in...

Wake is a little more casual but I would still go with slacks / shirt / tie.

The older crowd will still wear a suit and the ladies will likely be in dresses / pants suit.

You could also go with a collared shirt / vest but that wouldn't help with the heat much though. I guess my main concern would be not to be the most underdressed there so hot or not I would still go with a shirt and tie at least.

wakes are usually inside. and it's a/c (else the body will start smelling)

black suit, black tie

#2 choice:
dark sportscoat, dark dress pants, dark tie

i just went to my first funeral yesterday, for one of my old best friends. he's 18.

i wore black slacks with a black-ish buttoned shirt. it was kind of patterny. looking around i saw a lot of jeans and some Hawaiian shirts, even though it was mostly a young crowd. some people just wore regular clothes. i saw some blue jeans with nice black shirts. id suggest some black slacks and a nice button up shirt, w/e style.

EDIT: mostly short-sleeve too, and no ties.

i wasnt expecting such casual attire for a funeral. i thought i came under-dressed, but i guess not

If anyone comes to my funeral some day wearing jeans I will wake up, put on a hockey mask, and snuff them.

A wake is just one of those "play it safe" situations where you don't really want to stand out. I recently went to one and just wore black pants, white long sleeve button shirt and a dark tie. It's hot here but it was pretty cool inside the funeral home. I didn't wear my coat though and the only men there wearing them were the employees, the deceased and some really old family members.
