There are many other ways to go about this other than just blanket statements. We could for example create a open guest worker programs to allow people to come and work freely in the US while awaiting a citizenship decision, then if citizenship is approved they become a legal citizen, if denied they get deported. That would solve the problem without either open borders or mass deportation.

^ Makes a disparaging remark about "blanket statements" and then proceeds to suggest a guest worker program which is simply a subset of my call for "raise legal immigration quotas." I guess if you want to be pedantic about things you could make a distinction between long-term residents ("immigrants") versus short-term residents (visa holders on "guest worker program" or otherwise) but it's not a meaningful difference. Either way you seem to agree with my point that the root problem is whether people have the authorization of the U.S. to come/stay here and how illegally immigration basically comes down a mismatch in the demand for legal immigration and the supply of spots for that legal immigration. I'm guessing very few would be here illegally if they didn't need to wait endlessly to get a green card or guest worker visa.

So, I jumped the gun and wrote my reply without reading your full message, for that I apologize. We are apparently closer on this issue than I thought. I agree that main problem is that we need a more streamlined, or at least faster, immigration system with a quota that more reasonably matches the demand.

That is just very, very odd. I remember reading stories about how some of the Central American migrants in past caravans were “recruited” and possibly sponsored/incentivized to start their journey (as opposed to paying coyotes themselves.) When they get here and nothing is what they were promised, they get detained and then say “I never would’ve come if I knew how bad it would be.” I wasn’t sure I believed it, but if you have migrants from across the ocean using the southern border it makes me think someone helped put them there.

I know this sounds crazy, but I almost fear that a foreign (or domestic?) bad actor could be funding these caravans to promote their own agenda.

Yes, that’s definitely part of it. It’s also important to recognize that the dynamics of undocumented immigration are shifting, and Trump is using the wrong strategy for the current issue of record numbers from Central America seeking asylum.

Rather than building tent cities to detain those seeking asylum, we should be GPS tagging them, releasing them to churches, charities and volunteer orgs for care, and monitoring them on a probationary basis until their trial date. We should also be setting up processing centers within our Central American embassies and vetting as many of these people as possible in their countries of origin.

This wouldn’t have worked when folks crossing the border were unaccompanied Mexican men looking for work—they’d just slip across under cover of darkness and disappear into the undocumented workforce of America. But the asylum seekers are different—scared children and families who present themselves to authorities to make their claim.

Color me not surprised that @Greenman did not respond. I'll give him one thing; he has an awareness of when he has made an irrecoverable blunder. There are others around here, such as very young children with unexpectedly grown up features like beards, who will double or triple down when it is exposed they haven't a clue what they are talking about. *Cough* man baby *cough*. To answer your question, Greenie will not respond. I, for one, believe he was genuinely unaware of that fact - given his general posting history and especially his "I don't know" type posts.

The only thing the article does is blame Trump for the United States having a poor response to the crisis. That the "no illegals" Republican response IS the crisis. Where as opponents tell you it is the immigrants themselves that are the problem. Different goals, and different meanings of the word crisis.

we haven't done anything to stabilize the region while doing things that destabilize it. if ya want to stem the flow, the countries south of the border need more aid, not the threat to stop it. the flow north picked up after trump threatened to end aid. cause and effect, pretty simple.

the instability in central and south america will spread north and trump is doing nothing to counter that, just the opposite.

Obfuscate more. Trump doesn't care about what's actually happening. He just cares about how much political mileage he can get out of it. The bigger he can make the problem the more mileage he gets.

It's been shameful xenophobic demonization & mindfuck from the start.
