heh.. and on the other side, you have the nv fanbois in a feeding frenzy.. tho it's not much more than dozens of sharks fighting over a small scrap of bacon, lol...

frankly, i don't care much for 'fanbois' regardless of whose camp they side with. it degrades useful discussions mindless flamewars.

the reality is, with the recent 'unofficial' driver release (56.72 is still the whql), the (still unreleased) GT marginally wins a few, loses a few, and shows a significant advantage in one title (in the limited games benchmarked): CoD, which has resulted in all the nv 'fanbois' coming out of hiding and proclaiming their card the "winner", when in fact there is no such thing. simply put, nv has a great product, and arguably shows a slight advantage... but ati has a strong offering as well.

both sides have their driver issues, such as far cry with nv, splinter cell with ati, and both sides have otimizations that, depending on the particular situation, arguments can be made as to the slight superiority of each under unique circumstances.

i doubt either side is thru with performance improvements via improved drivers in the future (ati's new memory controller is only around 70% driver efficiency with current drivers, and they are rewriting the OGL side). new features such as sm3 or 3Dc have not yet shown their mettle, and may never in this generation (tho i still see sm3 a "trump card" over 3Dc, but that's just my speculation/opinion).

while i can certainly understand preferring one product over the other, to say one is significantly better than the other is completely unrealistic - both are very competetive products, and neither is a bad choice; it's more personal taste than actual differences...

I couldn't help but notice that you always seem to be on the "other" side. No matter what side that may be. What gives?

This is the most ridiculous thread in a long time. Anyone rational can see the following:

1) ATi and Nvidia's products are almost dead even in performance this round.
2) ATi and Nvidia's products are almost dead even in IQ this round.

That really IS 'nuff said. All this fanboying and arguin in forums doesn't change what the benchmarks are saying, which is listed above. Good day, and good riddance.

Let me turn the question around. My point is ?how does CaiNaM know that is ATI?s adaptive-Tri?

What were the settings? Do you have an identical shot from a 9800 (Full-Tri).

CaiNam...just for hte hell of it format then reinstall everything for each card...that way this guy will shut the hell up and stop claiming you dont know WTF you are doing and or saying.
Hey it?s nothing personal. CaiNaM is a smart dude and I have a lot of respect for him. I just happen to disagree with the shot he posted. Like I say, I?ve researched the issue extensively and ATI?s X800 Tri does not produce mipmaps like that. No one to date that I?m aware of has produced (confirmed reproducible) ) shots showing mipmaps on the X800 adaptive-Tri.

LOL. 😀 I have one of those adaptive-Tri 😉 ... BB ATI 9600XT?s. Nice card too.

pretty easy to spot, even from a "still" screenshot. it's even more pronounced when moving.
Sorry, that IS NOT ATI"S adaptive-Tri. NO way. Nadda. NOT. Borked settings, user error, or the game is not doing Trilinear.

lol.. of course it is - coming from someone who doesn't have one

actually, if you do a search, i'm not the only one who's seen this - others from this forums have noticed the same thing, and will verify what i've posted.

well, while that would be extreme, this was a fresh XP installation after the card was installed. also, having been involved in buiding server/workstations since the late 80's, i hardly require guidance in pc hardware 😉

how is that? you'll have to elaborate so i can try and answer... as for sides, i'm only on the side of accuracy - not nv or ati.

my point has been both cards use texture filtering "optimizations", and neither card (while both are very good) is perfect. i'm not sure how that's inaccurate....

not identical, but similar (i just took this in the same vicinity), using the same aa/af setting and driver (cat 4.5). you can see in this shot the texture filtering of the 9800p blends much better than the x800p as it actually blends - there's not direct line.

http://www.darkvengeance.net/test/sshot022.jpg

when playing, while moving there's a bit of 'shimmer' in the blend area, but it doesn't stand out like the distinct line shown using the x800pro.

lol im sorry this sudden bout of denial gave me a good laugh

...I can just see blastman saying this then promptly slamming his head into the sand like an ostrich, to make sure he doesn't see anything that might disagree with his position...

Seriously, like everyone has already said in 1000 threads, both companies have neck and neck perf and virtually identical IQ, so either is a perfectly fine choice. That leaves things open so that we can decide which card we want based on other things, like features or power consumption or whatever you think is that much nicer. This is a great generation for the consumer, and a pretty bad generation to be an unyielding fanboy. Of course, there's never really a good time to be one, either. 🙂

Can you grab a screenie of the same spot as CaiNaM's (if you have DAoC), it would be interesting to compare the 9600xt to the x800pro since they both use adaptive trilinear...they should look similar yes?

at least if your a fanboy your decision as to which next generation card your gonna get it considerably easier 😉 lol

Does anyone know where I can download a free demo of that darkvengeance?

CaiNaM,?..is there a possibility the settings in the game on the first shot weren?t correct? That first shot still looks like bilinear to me. There was a case (I think at nvnews) where someone posted a shot of ATI?s adaptive-Tri supposedly showing mipmaps in COD. It turned out that when they re-installed the ATI drivers, the in-game Bilinear/Trilinear settings defaulted/reset back to Bilinear.

i'm afraid not... it is what it is. it's all controlled from the cp, there's no in game settings for aa/af.

painkiller is fine, and for the most part so is far cry (lil 'shimmer'). it certainly is possible ati's drivers are messed up regarding this game, however it's done this thru 3 driver revisions (the shipping 4.6 which came with the card, the 4.6b, and now 4.7b).

i doesn't do it on the 9800p. haven't checked the 9700p, just got it back from rma.. not sure if i put it back in my other gaming rig or sell it...

No, they are honoring the prices. And even put them back up. You will get it for that price, just not until mid/end July.

and BB is honoring the $299 NV 6800 GT, some have already had their's ent out with email shipping confirmations.

Edit: NM I see your a Canuck, and are only trying to protect national pride.

BTW Your beer and hockey sucks. How the hell can your team get beat by a team from a state that never gets any snow???

HAHAHAH, ROFL...I almost fell outta my chair when I read that!

oh.. heh. the game is 'dark age of camelot' (mmorpg), and if you have broadband, you can download a 7 day trial (click the link). not sure if it will show the same thing, as the graphics engine is a bit older than the current one which comes with the 'trials of atlantis' expansion pack.

Then we have Nvidiot hypocrites attacking the same ideals they defended last round, and even more hyporcrites sitting back and pretending like they are better than anybody else when they flame/attack/make stupid comments just as much as everybody else, getting all worked up and then commenting on how everybody but them isn't getting obsessed with this stuff and relentlessly posting

and we also have the ATI hypocrites showing their faces too, now that ATI has cheats as well, yet you now praise them, when NV card owners were preached at for 18 freaking months! about how NV lowered IQ, now ATI does it, youre fine with it?

Now who's hypocritical? SHoe's on the other foot, and it's not wearing well is it?

I'd say it's LIKELY that it's the drivers at fault here, given it works fine on Painkiller and mostly on Far Cry. Test out some demos (UT2K4) and see if they behave the same. If not it seems obviously driver-related or possibly game-related. You should report it to ATI at the very least. I mean, they did ask for people to contact them if people found any lowering of IQ with this adaptive-tri algo.

I have a few shots of Bilinear/Trilinear on my 9600XT from the COD (demo) and SOF II. Both have an in-game setting for Bi/Tri. I tried to pick a good spot where the bilinear really shows.

9600XT-COD-Bilinear

9600XT-COD-Trilinear

9600XT-COD-Bilinear-8AF

9600XT-SOF2-Bilinear

9600XT-SOF2-Trilinear

As you can see the adaptive-Trilinear does an excellent job on the mipmaps. In fact, it does such a good job there really isn?t any reason to want to go back to the ? ?old? ? way of doing Trilinear. You get ~ a 5-10% (?) performance increase with no IQ drop at all.

A few notes:

If you set Trilinear in the ATI control panel --you only get Trilinear on the first texture stage and Bilinear after that. The only way to get Trilinear on all texture stages is to set the ATI control panel to ? ?application preference? ? and set Trilinear in the game. It?s possible this is what you are seeing in DAOC is -- Tri/Bi/Bi/..etc. ?.because Tri is being forced through the ATI control panel. Apparently NV is now doing this in their latest drivers too. AF usually pushes back the mipmaps into the background somewhat and does a pretty good job of blending them. If you don?t have AF on you ?may? see the first Bilinear mipmap in some games.

In the COD shot with 8AF even the Bilinear mipmaps boundaries are very hard to spot except for a ?bit? of texture aliasing along them when moving.

It seems you play "devil's advocate" which I'm not saying is a bad thing. It actually helps in some situations. A realistic approach. Thats all I meant. 😉
