Promise rings are silly, pointless, cheap baubles that mean nothing whatsoever, but young girls dig them because it makes them feel all grown up and special. So if you're in junior high school, go for it, but if you're in the real world, don't bother.

As for the other, well, one of my friends has had at least two promise rings of the "pre-engagement" variety from guys she's no longer interested in. I think that says it all right there.

This is the kind I am familier with and wore myself. Well, actually it was around my neck (ring on a chain) as I hated the feeling of rings on my finger. My wife took the neckless off on our wedding day. I was happy to make it till marriage as a virgin, it was a promise I actually kept.

EDIT** and the whole promise ring thing was never just for Girls, at least not the type I am talking about. I had many guy friends in church with them who had their wifes remove them the day of the wedding. I dunno how many of them should have still been on though... 😉
