promise fastrack 100 controller card + winXP

Hey All!
I recently purchased a new hard drive, and to add it to my PC i needed additional IDE ports. i happened to have a promise fastrack 100 controller card, so I thought it would be perfect. However, with windowsXP, i'm having a small problem. sometimes when I restart my PC, the hard drive doesnt show up. other times, its there. seems to be very hit or miss. i have no idea why it would be there one time and not another. Any ideas? I appreceiate everyone's help.

 all

I would check to see if there are any new drivers for the controller card from the manufactures website.

yes I have the newest drivers installed, along with the newest bios. however, I still have the same problem. I have tried a number of different IDE cables as well. Sometimes I just have to reboot and the hard drive shows up, other times I have to reboot 3 or 4 times before the hard drive shows up in windows. It's not the biggest deal, but it is rather annoying.

Actually, good question.
When the drive does show up in the ultra 100 bios, the drive does not show up in windows. If i get the message "ultra 100 bios not installed", then the drive shows up in windows. strange?

my mistake. it is not a fastrack card, it is just an ultra 100 TX2. problem remains the same, however. and yes i still have the newest drivers and bios installed.

I have seen a problem similar to this with some Maxtor drives that were plugged into an onboard promise RAID controller. Basically, the Maxtor drive would wait to be initialized by the RAID controller to really spin up, and then as soon as it got its start command it would spin up, but it TOOK TOO LONG and the system continued booting and "gave up" on the drive. Like yours, it was kind of hit-or-miss, and all he ever had to do was warm-reboot the system and the drive worked fine. His didn't make it into windows though, since he was booting off it.

Hope that helps

I see the latest drivers are dated from a few days ago. Wondering if maybe they're "too new" and you should backtrack to the previous version. New drivers are sometimes buggy.

The only thing I see is the FAQ's there at the Promise site. See some USB issues, but nothing that pinpoints your problem.

Could it be a jumper setting on the drive itself? You'd think it would be consistent though. Wish I had the answer for you.

Just reread your posts. Question 16 in the FAQ addresses, "What does it mean when I boot the system and the Ultra100 says, ´´BIOS Not Installed´´? "

that is my problem exactly. It is a maxtor drive that i have on the promise card. i mean it really is no big deal to just warm reboot, but if there was a quick solution, i'd take it 😀
