Another hot deal I saw today:

SD Link

The Tamron version routinely sells for $350-400+, so this is a great deal for the exact same lens. This version lacks the built-in AF motor, so it will not work on the D40/D40x/D60. However, this older, screw-drive version is said to be FASTER in AF compared to the newer version with a built-in DC motor.

How so?

I remember buying one at Best Buy. The first copy back-focused; I exchanged it an hour later for another copy that was dead-on.

Third party lenses have less accurate AF is just a fact of life. All you can do is hope to get a good copy.

I have never seen a Tamron I liked. Never. Then again, I try to stay away from them. I most always go Nikon, but have the Sigma 50-500mm as well. The only other 3rd party brand I'd go with for a Nikon mount would be Tokina.

I haven't tried the Tamron 28-75mm, but I think it's next on my list. The Nikkor 24-70mm is out of my reach; the Sigma 24-70mm HSM is getting average user reviews.

Sounds like a heckuva deal.

Funny about the screw-drive version having faster focus. I've read posts from Pentax users claiming that same phenomenon.

Don't some Nikons have BF/FF adjustments?

All the FX models do; only the D300 does on the DX side.

Too bad this wasn't for Canon. I've been looking to get the Tamron 17-50mm.

I already own a Tamron 28-75mm. It is a fantastic lens and is as sharp (probably sharper) than my 70-200mm F4L @70mm. Too bad Tamron doesn't have a USM equivalent system on it.
