Prom Dresses to revealing?

You know what else isn't classy, Puritans.

What do Puritans have to do with it? Prom is a FORMAL event, the dress is supposed to be FORMAL ATTIRE. Revealing clothing is NOT formal attire. It's really as simple as that. They are more than welcome to wear the skanky revealing dresses to all the other dances they have.

I would rather see females with their Jays and Nips out than classy covered up females. Its a basic male instinct.

🙄

Hypothetical question here, sort of:

So if the social norm changes and it becomes "socially acceptable" to wear such revealing dresses for the prom, is that really such a bad thing? Think about it... What if it becomes the norm for beautiful women to wear skimpier outfits?

Someone mentioned earlier in this thread that teenage pregnancy rates are up. Are they really? And if so, are they so as a direct result of this? If you think so, can you prove it?

Most knuckle dragging mouth breathers would agree with you.

nowever, the rest of us who've socially evolved beyond Neanderthal and prefer women with brains bigger than their capacity for slutiness do not agree with you.

Yep, I bet that whole porn thing is just a passing fad.

The context of my comment was a reply to what traits someone claimed to prefer in women, as if they were somehow the majority. What traits someone prefers in women has nothing to do with prom.

🙄

Society doesn't stay the same. Maybe this is the new "formal"?

Puritans: Is it really such a leap? Were you there for history class?

Why don't you look up "formal attire" throughout history and see what you come up with. I'm pretty sure the Tuxedo and Ball Gown have not always been it. Try some other cultures while you're at it. You might find that fashion has changed through the ages. You may also find that though Christianity isn't the only religion to tie morality to how one dresses, it is one of very few, and the Puritans one of the more strict about it. Gee I wonder how we ever had a controversy over how someone dresses?!?!?! Gee I wonder why I find that stupid...

Edit: Anyone who would use a double-standard word like, "skanky", is obviously greatly influenced by Puritan morality.

Are you out of your mind? Yes, it is a leap. CURRENT formal attire for a prom is a fairly conservative prom dress. THAT is what is expected. So THAT is what you wear. We're not talking about other cultures or other times, we're talking about right here, and right now. How about instead of a suit and tie, I wear something revealing to my next job interview .. I mean, why not? I shouldn't be held back by Puritanical dress codes, right? Are you kidding? Also, what is this double standard skanky business? I'm hardly influenced by Puritan morality, I'm not even conservative. But I do see the connection between a FORMAL event and FORMAL wear.

Really? REALLY?! It took this long??

'sup bitch, prom?

"Revealing" is defined differently over time. Showing ankles at one point was shocking. Displaying one's shoulders at one point was risque. Standards of provocative change between generations.

My mom and I were discussing it the other day. She was distressed over the tank tops my younger teenage sisters wear, with the straps not covering their bra straps, but I pointed out that they would NEVER wear shorts and skirts as short as she wore in high school. The standard of "provocative" has changed.

I think the defining question is what is the dress intended to evoke. Some of the pictures posted here are clearly intended for shock value; oddly shaped and placed see through sections, tiny straps of material covering the nipples... Those are not intended to be formal wear and are simply intended to be sexual. The deviation from the norm of aesthetic is too far to argue otherwise. Not appropriate. The plunging neckline and low back from the OP? Eh, hard to tell how far it actually goes down but that is only pushing the ticket a little further than what is already social acceptable, so it's indicative of changing standards of appropriate and attractive, rather than straight ahead suggestive. It doesn't creep much further (and covers more boob) than this, which wouldn't garner as many double takes or comments:

Of course, my hypothetical kid would never leave the house wearing most of the dresses posted in this thread, these included.

Well if people would teach safe sex, the pregnancy rate would go down and we'd be a much healthier country. It's funny that the people who complain the most about sex on tv and kids getting pregnant the most are the people from the south which happens to have the highest teen pregnancy rate and std rate. The ironing is delicious.

I think things would change if it were legal to touch whatever was not covered by clothing on another person.

That would be fun.

Says the guy with a hillbilly from Ohio for an avatar...🙂

Sorry, but Mr Ron "Pigpen" McKernan was the whisky-swilling, blues singing, dirty hippie original front man of the god damn Grateful Dead, born in CA, special man friend to Miss Joplin, and fantastic guy all around.

Your insinuations about OH insult me in a general way.
