"It is not primarily the sex/booze/drugs that surround this event, as problematic as they might be; it is rather the flaunting of affluence, assuming exaggerated expenses, a pursuit of vanity for vanity's sake -- in a word, financial decadence," Hoagland said, fed up with what he called the "bacchanalian aspects."

The school's principal is obviously a flaming liberal and borderline socialist. The sex and debauchery is ok but the flaunting of wealth is over the top? Gimmie a break. This is not a guy interested in the safety of his students. This is a guy who has a serious case of checkbook envy. Note to Hoagland: Leave the class warfare BS at home.

What a wonderful idea. Cancel the prom and send the kids away on a trip instead where they won't get drunk and copulate. And where might that be? Aruba - now there's a destination. Ain't no drinkin and boffin there!

Parents got together and paid for a $20k Hampton rental? Couldn't they have cut to the chase and saved a few bucks by renting some rooms at the Holiday Inn, getting a case of MD20/20, and a some boxes of condoms?

You're missing the entire point. The school wants NOTHING TO DO WITH IT. So they stopped it. If the kids, or their parents want to pay for their drinking/sex-fest so be it. But the school isn't going to openly give them a reason to do it.

How about edit for My name is Homer and I'm an idiot!

I didn't miss any point. The school canceled the prom because the kids drink and have sex afterwards. That's pretty clear. The fact that the school is going to send the the senior class to Disney World prompted my anecdotal reply. Or did you not read the CNN article? I just think it's pretty lame that the school thinks that booze and sex doesn't happen in Orlando.

God I hate having to explain myself to those of you who can't see outside your cubical (or playpen)
