Projection DLP or projection LCD HDTV?

Which would be best for console gaming and the occasional movie? Brightness and viewing angle may be a factor as it will be in a fairly bright room with shades that don't block all light. I have decided on projection for the size:price ratio, and LCD or DLP so I don't have to worry about burn-in and other factors inherent to CRT RPTVs.

Thanks.

edit: Apologies if this is the wrong forum. I've managed to stay out of OT for 3 years so I've not looked there for similar questions. :p

I would have to agree, even though I am still not 100% that you are talking about a TV or a Projector. The only thing I would warn about DLP if you getting a projector is the rainbow effect. The rainbow effect is prevelant in lower quality projectors, you can read more about this a projectorpeople.com.

You can see the rainbow on the RPTV DLP's as well. Some people see them some don't.
I've read that some LCD and DLP TV's are bad with the PS2 and XBOX. I don't recall what the issues are but I believe it had to do with picture quality or blocky graphics.

LCD tends to have a slightly larger viewing angle, and on some sets slightly higher brightness. However, screen door really takes away from that movie theater like image. I would suggest DLP in your case, just be prepared to get some thicker drapes

I have yet to come across a rear projection screen that just didnt suck. Whether HD or not, rear just blows IMO.

Well, I have to disagree with this statement. I'd say my 50" Samsung HLN5065W1 and my 60" Sony KDF-60XS955 look just as good with High Def material as my direct view 32" Samsung CRT HDTV.

Back to the OP question, it all depends on what you want it for and which you like better. I know my Samsung DLP looks "crisper" then the Sony LCD, but the with standard def signal, the Sony handles it much better. With the DLP, it's pretty much garbage in, garbage out. If you give it a crappy signal (ie 480i), you're getting a crappy picture. The Sony LCD on the other hand does a much better job cleaning up the SD signal.

You need to go out and look at all the models your considering and decide which one looks best to you. Remember, with CC or Best Buy, you have 30 days to try it out in your home, if you don't like it, just return it and get your money back or pick a different one.

If you do decide DLP and you're getting a 720p set (the 1080p sets will be out this fall), make sure you get the HD2+ chip and not the HD3. The HD2+ uses one mirror per pixel, while the HD3 uses one mirror per 2 pixels, it was a cost cutting measure on TI's part. Some people like the HD3 better though, because it uses a 7 segment color wheel as opposed to the 6 segment the HD2+ uses. This supposedly gives the HD3 better colors, but in my opinion, it's definitely not as sharp as the HD2+ chip TVs.

LCD RPTV's do not burn in. I'm not sure if DLP's do.

PS2 and XBOX don't support HD, but they do 480p. Some games like GT4 may force HD resolution, but I've had mixed results with that.

DLP don't get burn-in.

Here's how they work (very cool if you ask me).

They both support HD, you just need to have the component cables. Most of the Sega Sports games are in HD for the xbox, 720p. As you stated, GT4 can be 480i, 480p or 1080i. Once you play some of the xbox titles in HD, you won't want to play non hd games again. Forza kinda sucks because it's only 480p and doesn't have widescreen, you have to stretch it or force 4:3. But it's still the best racing game for the box.

DLP is slightly better but IMO lcd projection is better overall. dlp is has a movie color wheel on the inside and we all know anything with moving parts eventually breaks down its like a hardrive. lcd projection is good because the only thing that can go wrong with it is the light bulb goes out lets say this happens well you can replace it urself easily all you have to do is get a new light bulb and take out old. with dlp you have to have a pro come to your house and fix. lcd projection is also older technology and lots of the bugs have been fixed i recommend you go with sony, or panny if you going lcd projection.

edit: give me a pm if you have any questions i will be glad to assist you.

Some DLPs have user serviceable bulbs. For instance the mitsubishi's.

Breakdown of the colorwheel would be very rare if ever. Frankly it is not a concern.

Flat Panel:

Plasma (37"-61") - Wall Mountable - Excellent viewing angle - Very good Contrast Radio & Blacks - Moderate Burn-in Potential - Color closest to Tube TV's.

LCD (13"-46")- Wall Mountable - Good to Very good viewing agle - Good contrat & Blacks - No burn in potential - Picture slightly less natural than plasmas.

Digital Big screem: Not wall mountable.

DLP (46"-62") - Good viewing angle - Very good contrast & blacks - No potential burn in - Best blacks amoung digital big screens, Few readers sensitive to rainbows.

LCD (42"-70") - Good viewing angle - Good contrast & blacks - no potential burn in - Most affordable big screen, contrast and blacks some what limited.

just finding out why you hate projection so much. but yes a CRT set is good...just can't get too large or else it would be wayyyy to heavy and bulky.
