Project Management Software

It's my senior year of college and as such I've got a senior project this year. Our team consists of five people. My instructors have set up a group page on Blackboard but it is very, very awful.

So, I'm interested in some form of project management software. It has to be free, and it has to be accessible from at least Windows and OS X. It can be a web service or application. I have my own server to which I could install the software to, if necessary. I'd rather do that than have all my data handled by a third party.

As far as features, well I don't really know what I need, yet.

This seems like it might be good, but I figured I'd try and get some feedback first.

If this needs to be moved, so be it. I wasn't sure which software forum to put this in.

Thanks!

That link looks pretty good.

BackPackIt is another one.

For our senior design project, I just had one of the team members create a group account on his server so all documents can be uploaded and downloaded to it. It doesn't have anything like formal version control or how to deal with concurrent access, but I don't see that being a real problem. Word documents for research, current tasks, status updates, meeting minutes, etc..., Excel spreadsheet for log of individual and team's hours, Gantt chart in Project for timeline, etc...

It most certainly isn't the ideal solution but it was definitely the quickest and easiest (all I had to do was tell someone to create the account 🙂) because I didn't have time to setup and manage something better.

OpenGoo is another option. Both OpenGoo and ProjectPier are based on ActiveCollab 0.7.

Right now my company is using ActiveCollab 0.7 for project management, and we will be upgrading to version 1.0 as soon as it's released (this week!). However if you are looking for free hosted project management software then ProjectPier and OpenGoo are both great choices.

Check out SourceForge.net for some.

I had worked for a company that entire business model was built from applications obtained/improved from that site.

Thanks for the responses so far. I'm working on getting the requirements for ProjectPier set up on my server after which I'll give that a shot. I'll look into OpenGoo too.

If anyone else has any other suggestions, feel free to chime in.

Thanks! 🙂
