Progressive insurance - any good?

I've been looking at insurance, and Progressive is a lot cheaper than most of the competitors. I'm insuring my first car, and so my rates are pretty steep; one quote was over $130 for liability alone. Progressive has an altogether more reasonable price of $55 for liability, which looks a lot more attractive.

However, there's an awful lot of complaints out there. Some folks complain of being harassed; others report not getting covered. That said, Progressive does seem to cover an awful lot of past DUI recipients, and their refusing to pay out may not be so unreasonable as it sounds.

What's your thoughts on the issue?

I get insurance from whoever is cheapest and pray that they will pay if I ever need it.

Typically, the only people that complain about insurance are the ones that have a problem (real or imagined). Pretty much every insurance company out there will have people complaining about how something didn't work out the way they wanted.

Same here, haven't had any issues with them and have been with them for quite awhile now. Only claim I've had to file with them was for windshield damage though, actually twice. It wasn't any fault of Safelite however, who is Progressive's preferred company for glass repair/replacement. It went extremely smooth for both claims.

I've had Progressive for... gosh, almost 10 years now, I think! Never had a problem with them. They are easy peasy. Of course car insurance markets vary from state to state, but I can't imagine Progressive being any worse than any other major insurance co.

Have you tried 21st Century? I saw a TV ad the other day claiming they were cheaper than both Progressive and Gieco.

Name an insurance companies commercials that don't say they're cheaper than their competitors. It's the only marketing strategy insurance companies use.

Actually, they say, "Those who switched, on average, saved money;" which is kinda "duh," because why else would anybody switch?

Or, here's one right from Progressive: "We compare your Progressive Direct rate to other top companies so you can save money." But if you'll notice they don't say, "Save money by switching to Progressive."

Lots of tricks so as not to run afoul of truth in advertising. They'd get fined to hell and back if they just made the claim of "cheapest" without it being verifiably true.

USAA is usually the lowest

Truth. Except USAA doesn't insure motorcycles. So I had to go with progressive. Looking at quotes for a new bike that I want to get and progressive will cost me more than Geico.

I've had Farmers, State Farm, and Geico before switching to Progressive ,and have had only one claim over the years, and that was with Farmers for hail damage. I've had progressive for around 10 years, have been lucky and haven't had any claims, and they seem to be the only company out of this group which actually lowers my rate every year I'm with them. I always get these letters in the mail from companies in which I've used for homeowners insurance, and they always say "save by combining your home and auto". Well, every time I compare, I still end up better off having my homeowner's insurance from one company, and my auto insurance from progressive.

I was on the other end of an accident with a Progressive insurance holder. We both were sighted 50/50 on the scene for fault. I figured I would just have to pay for the repair since it wasn't more than $1000 even though the other driver was probably 100% at fault.

Well, to my surprise, I received a call about 5 days later with Progressive taking 100% responsibility and wanting to know when I would want to the car repaired. They suggested on of their repair center which was a very pleasurable experience and the car looked like new. I wan't even their customer and they treated me very well.

Most insurance companies write their insurance through the same people... so regardless of the brand name, chances are that it could be the very same policy from one company to the next.

Progressive does homeowners insurance now.

My sister has had them for a few years and has never had a problem (couple minor claims).

I have both auto and home insurance with them, & have for pushing 5 years.

They've always been good, and I've filed a few claims with them. One glass claim, one hood repaint from road debris, one comprehensive claim (vandalism to my car), and one at-fault accident of the gf. We had the gf's car repaired at their recommended shop, the shop was equally good to deal with.

One nice thing is comprehensive claims under $1000 don't affect your rate. When my car got keyed it ended up being under $1000 after my $100 deductible so my rates didn't suffer at all. They didn't even complain too much about me waiting 4 months after the damage to get it fixed.

Heard decent things about Progressive outside of my area (MN). Multiple people I know have filed claims here and Progressive might as well have mildly-trained monkeys processing the claims - it would have been better than their workers around here. It seriously is almost comical how inept they have been. One of cars in question was flooded this past summer, and Progressive screwed-up the paperwork so bad it was towed all around town to the tune of over $1000. The tow-truck driver was laughing all the way to the bank. Add to the fact that they have "multiple tracking systems" that disagree on if a car has been totaled or not, and it adds up to them jerking your chain for weeks on end.

Overall they are good, but avoid like the plauge here in MN.

This has been true for me, too. My rates have gone down almost every period (although this may have something to do with me being a male driver in the 20-30 year old range for the time that I've been with Progressive). I got a quote from Geico a few years ago, and it was more than $100 more than what I had with Progressive.

I have had one claim experience with Progressive. The accident was the other guy's fault, and he had Progressive too. They arranged for towing and all repairs, and they paid for a rental car the whole time my vehicle was in the shop (which ended up being about a month -- there was a lot of damage).

I've had Progressive for around 8 years now after telling Allstate to suck it.

Only real complaint I had was when I first bought my WRX, two weeks afterwards I got rear-ended by a cop at a stoplight. There were clear indentations from his license plate bracket, not scuffs, like a molded impression, along with a puncture from the screw.

Anyways, I drive over to the adjusters office, he comes out and starts telling me literally, that it will "buff right out". I shit you not. Needless to say, I nearly went apeshit on him, this was a brand new car and I wasn't taking anything less than a new bumper.

In the end I got what I wanted but it's scary how dumb they think the average customer is.
