What programs or boot disk do you run to make sure your components are working properly in your new build? Ex: To check ram, hdd life and performance, CPU stress tester, etc.

I feel like this should be a sticky for new users after they piece together their first build to make sure something is not defective, so faulty hardware can be taken care of right away instead of months or weeks later when problems begin to rise.

RAM: memtest 86+
HDD performance: CrystalDiskMark, HD Tune
CPU stress test: Prime64, OCCT
GPU stress test: Furmark

In general, I don't bother stress testing unless there's an immediate problem, because either the component is DOA or the defects don't manifest themselves until after some amount of time.

This is what I believe too. Unless you are overclocking or are having some kind of issue, why look for problems that will probably not be there?

For instance, if you have an anti-virus software already installed and updated, is there any purpose to re-scanning your system daily if you already know there's no computer virus there, and everything that comes in from the network gets scanned already?

If you buy a new car, do you immediately have your personal mechanic give it a 100 point inspection just in case there might be a problem with it?

Do you re-boil water that you get from a sealed bottle with a "distilled water" label?
