programs that reduce CPU temp

A long time ago I had a program that reduced the CPU temperature by grading its performance, i guess. I forgot what the thing was named, and now I have a new machine I want to run it on.

I believe the name had 'ice' in it... any suggestions?

Rain is certainly the way to go with software coolers because it takes up practically no system resources when it runs. I have the program setup to start with Windows and I leave it running 24/7 with no impact on the performance of games, programs, etc.

I had a link to download Rain 2.0, but I can't find it now. It does not matter because version 2.0 is identical to version 1.0 that BLoop has above. Both versions do exactly the same thing and you will see no improvement by using the latest version.

wow! i didnt even know that software that cools your CPU existed. how exactly does a program like that work?

It tells your processor not to do any work basically.
The downside is that it can't cool your CPU IF you're making it work (games, etc.)

A program like Rain issues a Halt command to the CPU when no cycles are being used. In other words, when you are not taxing the CPU, the cooling software simply tells it to go into a halted or standbye mode, and the CPU temp. drastically drops when in this mode.

However,the software cooling does nothing when you are using CPU cycles like game playing or browsing the Net.

RAIN worked great with my celeron366@550, i recommend it too

but i heard as long as your computer is set up in ACPI mode, windows will automatically issue the HALT command. I heard this was true since windows98se(??)

Anyone know what you can do about Athlons? Doesn't seem like Rain supports them

hey guys, how about some numbers here? what were your CPU temps before and after executing the RAIN program? i tried it last night after i was done gaming and web browsing, and i didnt really see a difference in temp at all. do i need to give it more time to bring the temp down? i've been hearing about people saying it drastically brings the temp down (i find that hard to believe w/ any kind of software cooling, but i would setle for a significant decrease in temp). give me numbers people!

I tried using all three.. and after a year of using them i decided to go with a good old hardware cooling solution. No impact on anything whatsoever

It will reduce them 1-3C..ONLY at IDLE. It doesn't do jack when your computer is in use...

well i executed RAIN with no other programs running, and i checked my idle CPU temp with ASUS PC Probe about 10 minutes later and it was still at the usual 32C. maybe it just doesnt work for some people?

Cools my CPU by 6-7C as measured by a thermistor touching the side of the slug. C633@981 - 1.75v

BTW, it does work durring all general computer use - browsing etc..., as long as high CPU cycles aren't needed including gaming, SETI, RC5, Prime95 and the like.

yea, and the highest intel CPU is a PII. i have a P3...does that mean it wont work for me? and dont you think they would have made a version that would be optimized for the Pentium III since its been on the market for years now?

I don't think it really matters as to what processor you select - just get the nearest one to yours. Rain sees my Celeron 633@950 as a Pentium Pro, so I just selected the Celeron option, and it works fine.

In your case with the P3, using the P2 processor should do fine.
