It's a good step for them, ultimately. Yes, it's going to sting a bit. It would be great if everything worked seamlessly. In return for a much-stronger security, the inconvenience knob has to get turned up a bit.

You'd probably get the same list installing ZoneAlarm or any other firewall.

I'm no MS fanboy: I've ranted a time or two against MS' abuse of their monopoly power to destroy competition, but so far SP2 fear-mongering seems unjustified.

Not that I'm installing it on my main PC any time soon, not until more of you test it for me first :)

I believe it's slated for mid to late August. The network install package is available already if you don't want to wait. I snagged it the other day and made a couple of custom slipstreamed CD's for my PC's at home.

If you feel ambitous, you can just follow the simple instructions here.

:)

ditto, I never ever update and my computer is perfectly fine.

I tried SP1 once and jesus was that a mistake. 2 mins to start up (takes maybe 20 right now) and the computer couldn't open programs for the first 10 seconds after making it to the desktop

I have sp2 installed on my gf's computer and everything's been fine for a week (MS Office Apps, Nero, etc etc.).

Err, you answered your own question.
MS now has all the buggy and insecure programs unable to work. They just forgot to break IE.

Agreed. I have a lot of those programs installed on my SP2 machine, and have had zero problems. Maybe it is because I did a clean slipstreams install, but I havent had any issues with the upgrade, and actually love it. Startup times have been reduced, better bluetooth support, better IE, etc...

i had a problem with diskeeper and performing a boot time defrag. after the boot time defrag I was not able to enter windows any longer. needless to say, diskeeper is off the system until an update is released.

the newest version of nero ultra seems to be working fine though. dunno.

Ditto to that. I really don't know what all the fuss is all about.

I think MS was trying to fix the majority of the problems associated with the people who don't install their own antivirus or firewall programs. If you think about it most people who use windows don't bother with even updating their apps. So their target audience is still pretty much unaffected. I was reading somewhere that most of the businesses running windows (specifically Intel) aren't in any hurry to install SP2 for fear that it might interfere with some critical business operation.

let me get this straight...People rag on MS for putting out bloated, buggy, unsecure operating systems. And then when MS says "fvck it, were not going to support all this legacy crap that's part of the reason why our OS is bloated, buggy, and unsecure anymore", people bitch about that.

NICE
