Flight Simulator X with SP1
According to Microsoft, Flight Sim X will use multiple cores and does benefit from 4 cores even more than 2 cores.

Quote below is from above link

One of the first games ever developed for the PC is also entering the quad-core era. "The latest version of Microsoft Flight Simulator* X, Service Pack One (SP1), due out later this month, is a great match for the extreme multi-core processing delivered by the new Intel Core 2 Extreme quad-core processor," said Phil Taylor, Flight Sim Program Manager, Microsoft Game Studios. "Flight Sim X SP1 greatly increases multicore utilization and will scale as more threads are available leading to reduced load times as well as frame rate improvements and greater visual complexity during flight. The Flight Simulator team at Microsoft is pleased to work with Intel to provide our end users with a great gaming experience."

Keep in mind these applications will also use four independent CPUs as well.

I read somewhere that Office 2007 - well more specifically Excel 2007 - has multi-threaded formula calcs and will take advantage of multiple cores. Anyone seem this in action in a quad core by any chance?

Here is a list of multi-threaded applications
for Win32 from one of the fine posters at 2cpu.com

Edit: :) @ swtethan and hahahahaha @ jpeyton's videos

While you listed Sony Vegas, the consumer oriented Vegas Video Studio also uses 4 cores...

I'm pretty sure lost planet PC edition uses more than 2 cores, at least the q6600 spanks the e6850 when running the cave demo, i'd asume the only way a slower 4 core processor could beat a significantly faster clocked dual core processor is if the game is actually using all 4 cores, but my assumptions have been wrong :) the benchmarks are on toms cpu comparisons i believe.. (tomshardware.com)

Also games that have stated they are going to use/using multi core (more than 2):
Crysis
Unreal Tournament 3
Alan wake
(and i'm not sure of but i think, Bio shock)
ID Tech (id's new game)

These games are only rumored though and cannot be confirmed/tested by us the public, so i understand if they aren't to be included, but Lost Planet should be looked into.

CoCreate OneSpace Designer, industrial strength 3D solid modelling software
Pro-E
Solidworks

all multi-threaded.

It is actually quite nice to have quad-core usage on this as when I am making backups I don't like to have anything else open and doing anything on my computer, so backup time = total loss of access to computer. So anything that can make a 1hr backup job become 15min, thereby giving me back 45min of my computer access for doing other stuff (even if single-thread stuff) is well worth the cost of a quad for me.

2nd'ed

I use Acronis True Image 11 (Home edition)... it does indeed use all 4 cores of my Q9450 and damn near maxes them as well. I backup my C: drive (which contains 64-bit Vista Ultimate and a few programs, totalling about 16GB) in under 6 minutes or so (maybe less, I'll have pay attention to it next time).

Microsoft's latest flight simulator, FSX, uses all 4 cores @ ~100%, as long as your video card is fast enough to keep up. Here's a screenshot. The reason that cores 1,2, and 3 are no longer maxed is because I fumbled around for a few seconds looking for the Print Screen key after Ctrl-Alt-Deleting, but you can tell from the screenshot that they were maxed.

The homepage is here.

edit: Oops, I forgot to say that it has to be patched to at least SP1 (FSX, not Windows), before it becomes multithreaded. Also, as you can see, the core usage goes up and down, so it probably averages ~80-90% across all 4 cores.

edit 2: In case there's any doubt, FSX is a game, although some old men don't like admitting that.

It does use all 4, just not at 100%, I get roughly 15-20% higher useage with 4 cores(65-70%), occasionaly breaking 75%, while with my dual core it was maxed out.

are you on a very large map with tons of bots?

btw, assimilator, fsX= flight simulator 10.

Supreme commander and Forged Alliance (another version of SC) uses all 4 cores.

This was proved and shown. And quads own in that game. You wont find a hardcore SC fan who will run this game on max settings without one.

Anything which is using a process tree of greater then 80% is using all 4 cores.

Cores are broken into 25% divisions when looking at task monitor.

Normal games dont break 30-33% process meaning its a single core game.

Ive seen a few which go as high as 73-74% which means its a tri core game. :\ Kinda wierd, i think its a dual core and the third core is used by windows.

Supreme commander will tip 100 -> 90 -> 79%

Which means it uses all 4 cores when needed.

Dude the game requires expensive hardware to run smoothly will full AA and Anti with max settings. :D [not as bad as crysis, sorry i feel thats the shittiest programed game in the creation] GT200 SLI FTW to run smoothly is rediculous.

But both look absolutely wonderful, expecially forged alliance. Its funny how people dont understand how much of a difference games look when you max something and strip something.

Any audio production program (Sonar, Cubase, Pro Tools) that uses VST and/or DXi instruments/effects will cheerfully max out multicore systems if you have enough instruments/effects running.
