To start off, i just want to say that i'm a complete linux newbite.. haven't even touched the stuff but i just want to make sure i can do the things i want before i even try..

I'm planning on replacing my current windows 2000 ICS/Webserver "power drainer" with a fairly old UltraSparc IIi that i have sitting around. I'm planning on installing some sort of sparc64 distribution and they all say that this machine will not run normal intel linux programs.

I'm just wondering, is it all a matter of downloading the source files of these programs (apache in my case) and compiling them for sparc? Thanks!

(btw, if it is just a matter of that, can someone recommend a good ICS type program?)

You can download the source, but I imagine most distros with sparc64 support have a package lying around for apache. As far as ICS, Linux has it built in basically. Turn on ip forwarding and create some IPTables rules.

Some program will work some won't, it just depends on whether the program has been tested and ran on non-Intel boxes yet. As x86-64 and IA-64 get more use I'm sure it'll change, but right now most people only have Intel boxes to program on.

I would personally recommend Debian, it's not the easiest to install but they've got ~8500 packages available for sparc in woody already.
