Program to download pictures from my camera in Win2k?

We're probably going to be taking a laptop with us on vacation. The sole purpose of it will be to offload pictures from the digital camera to insure we don't run out of room on the memory card.

What's a good freeware/shareware program to do this that works with any camera? Just needs to be able to offload the pictures. No need for photo editing, emailing, organizaing, etc. We'll take care of all that when we get home.

Best thing would be to get a USB memory stick reader.
This way the laptop looks at the stick just like another hard drive.

Otherwise, you will have to get S/W that is specific for the camera to dump the shots.
Such S/W should have come with the camera or is available from the manf web site.

I ran into that problem a year ago when the USB cable for a HP camera was lost. Cheaper to get a $5 reader than pay $25 list for the cable.
 
Main thing is I may use this for My camera and my Sister's camera. We have a Kodak and she has a Sony or something. Do programs like ACDSee work with all cameras or anything like that? I'm not sure what kind of memory chip her's uses but I guess a reader would work.

Can you get them for $5 at Best Buy or OM or places like that?
 
BB & OM would be in the $20+ range for a Multi-card reader.
A card read will create a Drive (letter) for every port the reader has
(and 8-1 reader will create 8 drives).

The Kodak likely uses COMPACT FLASH, the Sony MEMORYSTICK.

Also, if you are using Win9x it requires a driver to be installed, while
Win2k/XP do not.

A card reader advantage is that it allows you to handle the transfer
of pics to the PC without having to use the camera, saving camera power.

I guess I could always buy one and returned it in 2 weeks when I get back. heh heh.

Damn, $40 at Best Buy. They are such a ripoff. I think I will buy it and take it back later. Maybe I'll try OM or OD too.
 
how do you connect your cameras to the pc to get your pictures now? i thought most cameras came with a cable to connect to usb to grab the photos. plug in, it shows up in my computer, you drag over and you are done. or doesnt that work in win2k?
 
Do the cameras have a USB cable to connect to the laptop? If so, you don't need any software, just use Windows Explorer to navigate to the camera and move the pics. Otherwise, you'll need a card reader. But you still won't need any extra software. The memory card should look just like a normal drive.
 
Well that's cool. I plug in USB but it just pops up a wizard in my XP machine. I never even thought to look to see if it shows up as an actual Drive on the 2k machine. I just noticed it didn't run any wizard so I didn't look any further.

I guess that will make things real easy if that's all it takes. Of course with the benefit of not having to ahve the camera on while downloading (USB1.1 on the laptop) it might be worth it to use the adaptor thing. I bought it today from BB but it's going back in 2 weeks. 🙂
 
This free (from google) claims to "Auto-transfer photos from your digital camera". I installed it on an XP machine and haven't tried it on a Win2K computer yet ...but I like it's interface. You might try it.
