Program to defrag hard drive

What are the common programs to defrag hard drive or to optmize hard drives?
Any freeware or shareware?
Windows itself used to have one, but I can't find it.

Any good utility that's not only to optimize the had drive but to optimize your computer performance in general?

Thanks

Great opening post!

Are you being sarcastic?

Windows has one...in every version that I'm aware of (cept the pre-windows 95 onez 😛).

try start/run/defrag

I was just wondering if there are better programs than defrag. Programs that would actually optmize the system???

I am on XP.
The defrag doesn't run. When I run it, it opens and close in a split second.
There is something wrong.

????

No - just get rid of TSR's and exit out of anything that is runnning in the background - than it will run.

I use O&O Defrag, it isn't free...

But its better then Windows XP defrag software.

I also use O&O. It's very fast compared to the built in defrag and has several different modes.

Well....you're describing Norton Utilities.

Might want to try a search....the disk optimization question gets asked alot.

I downloaded the trial version of disk keeper and I ran it yesterday. Seem pretty good.

I am also looking for something like clean sweep that will help me get rid of old orphan files, dlls, etc...

Thanks a lot guys!

Just one note... I used Diskeeper one time a year or so ago and it screwed up my PC. I did a boot time defrag so that it could move defrag/move the paging and swap files and defrag the Master File Table. Well, my PC wouldn't boot after it finished and I had to reinstall Windows. I've been using Perfect Disk since then with no issues.
