Program to convert video files?

everyone uses handbrake to copy dvd's on the mac side.

imo it sucks.

toast sucks too but its a ware (non free).

tmpgenc dvd authoring (and tmpgenc encoder) are my pc faves. nothing comes close. oh yeah NERO ftw - why not on mac?

Why does Handbreak suck? I've never had a problem with it.

I like MPEG Streamclip. Will encode just about anything. Free on Mac and PC, though the Mac version requires you to buy the Quicktime MPEG2 codec from Apple if you're going to be transcoding those files.

handbrake rips, sorta the opposite of vso which converts most anything to dvd..and which is a easy to use program.

I don't normally burn DVDs so this is a shot in the dark, but wouldn't iMovie be able to do this?

well, convertxtodvd is $50 (not freeware).

the gold standard on the Mac is Roxio Toast.

version 7 on Amazon is about $30 used. it's currently on version 10.
version 8 or 9 would work fine also.
