Program running at start up ....

I just recently had a program installed on my computer that I believe was generating trojan each time my computer started up. It took me awhile to find it, since the program itself wasn't a virus, and norton virus scan was deleting the file everytime, but regardless the file was recreated once I started up my computer again. Eventually I found the name of the exe that seemed to be creating the trojan at start up, and I deleted it.

Well... that got rid of the trojan detections by norton.. good thing! But... something is still trying to run the exe I deleted. I ran Regclean, and the Norton one button check up to check for registry errors etc... fixed any ones that were found and restarted. Still getting the error that is looking for the exe file.

I need to get rid of this, I can't stand these kind of error pop ups every single time I turn on my computer... what else do I need to do ?

Yeah, there is anything that has the same name as the file that is being tried to open at start up... but I have everything that I didn't recognize unchecked, didn't help any.

That was one of the first things I tried.

There are only a few places where it could be trying to startup check the following keys.

Startup Progams in registry
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunServices

you can also search the regsitry looking for that file.

try putting yourself in a clean boot (through msconfig)
also boot to safe mode because if you don't get the error in safemode.

but it has to be in the registry somewhere if not, you wouldn't be getting the error

I had the problem with openme.exe it was asking for that file every time

so i went to the registry and searched for openme.exe it turns out that in local machine/software/microsoft/winnt/winlogon the explorer.exe had another file associated with it called opeme.exe and basically it was opening up with explorer so you wouldn't notice it. After deleting the openme.exe from the explorer.exe part of the registry all is fine and it doesn't ask for that file.

You didn't mention what the name of the .exe was that you deleted. I took a clue from cmdrdredd and searched google for his openme.exe and found alot of possible solutions for it on forums. You might try a google search with your .exe.

I would recommend getting your hands on AdAware. If you're using DivX 5, it comes with this wonderful piece of spyware called Gator/GAIN. It's known to start with logon, and track all usage, reporting it back. (AFAIK DivX 5 watching works fine with GAIN damaged/disabled by AdAware, but NOT encoding and NOT their stupid 'Playa.') It could be some other piece of spyware as well. You can get AdAware here. Fair warning - their webserver is SLOW.
