Program Association

I receive several newsletters (Newsmax) along with some e-mail attachments that I have never had problem reading. All of a sudden when I try to open, I get the following message:

This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Please insatall a program or if one is already installed, create an association in the Default Programs Control Panel.

What program can I download to be able to read these? I have no earthly idea what I am doing here...any detailed info would be greatly appreciated.
