Profile Update ERROR

Ashen Shugar

Senior member
Hi,

I'm having a problem with updating my profile... I need to change the email address to my comcast account since the attbi account won't forward anymore in 2005. However when I try to make this or ANY OTHER change (like the signature), it gives me an error saying the following:

ERROR: Your username contains special character. Usernames must only contain alphabetical or numeric characters.

Error Code: 159

I guess I have an _ in my screen-name, but I've been registered since 1999, and I don't see why that would be an issue now. Any suggestions on how to solve this issue? Thanks,

-Parin

They changed the software, and now it's going to be picky about "special characters" in your username. The only way to solve this is to PM the "AnandTech Moderator" to ask them to change your username. From what I've seen, the space seems to be a legal character these days (for a while it wasn't), so perhaps you could have them replace your underscore with one of those?

Thanks for the suggestion. I've PM'ed the Moderator... it would be nice if they could just solve this without changing the name, since my Heatware feedback is also under the same screen-name.

I tried to keep the _ and change my profile, but they said (in a thread, not a PM) that "_" had been illegal for two versions and wouldn't help me. 🙁

Me too, now I have no sig. 🙁

Worth it to keep the cool illegal characters though 😉

I too just received this error when I tried to change my email address.

Is there a solution?

Make sure your email address is valid per the FAQ.

I do not get an error regarding my email address, nor does it appear in the "banned" list. I was trying to change my rocketmail.com address to my new gmail.com address.

Minendo probably didn't notice that you also have one of the now banned characters in your username. Unfortunately, as stated before, the only way to resolve this is to have the character removed or replaced. 🙁

Thanks for the help guys... I've contacted a mod and they'll be removing the _ from the screen name. Its too bad there was no other way to solve this issue.

send a private message to "Anandtech Moderator". You will not see that certain people here are marked with the title of moderator, they share one accounts (or however they do it) named "Anandtech Moderator" The moderators here are totally anonymous and when one of them gets the message they will help you out 🙂

Since spaces are now allowed, I wouldn't mind to trade in the underscore for a space. But I'd be hard-pressed to relinquish the -dash- because it would be poor form.

Are there really any pranks that can be accomplished with a dash? I know the underscore is tricky.
