Professor told to accomodate student who refuses to attend class with women

How are we supposed to be removing discrimination from our society when places like this university allow special treatment for religious sexist? The way I see it, the university is promoting, or at least allowing, discrimination against women by allowing a man special treatment.

If the guy had refused to attend class with blacks would he get the same special treatment?

A sociology professor went up against his university in an unexpected fight when a student in his online course refused to attend an in-person class with women, citing his religious beliefs. The professor refused to accommodate him, but the university said he was obligated to respect to student’s wishes.

The student wrote to York University professor J. Paul Grayson in an email that his religion prevented him from mingling with women in public.

How are we supposed to teach equality when bigots get special treatment?

It doesn't say that the professor was forced to accomodate the student.

In the end, Grayson denied the request, though the dean offered to refund the class if the student still could not attend the co-ed portion. The student, however, respected Grayson’s final decision and met with the group.

If he were in one of my classes I would tell him straight up to go play on a busy highway.
Some college students are just plain fucking nuts.

I wonder where he thinks he's going to find gainful employment where he'll never have to interact with women.

Anyway it doesn't seem like much of a story. Some nut makes a nutty request and gets shot down.

Whatever university employee thought of this and whatever university board thought it was a good idea and approved it should be forced to live in a tent with "Mr. My religion says I can't mingle with women in public."

Bud, you're taking your faith WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY too seriously.

The guy is a complete moron and the idiots at the university who supported him need to have their heads examined. This is too much pandering.

This is a slippery slope. What's next, accommodating employers who don't want to cover women specific health issues in their insurance for religious reasons?

This happened in Canada. I'm not familiar with Canada's laws regarding bigotry or religious accommodation, so I can't speak to the legal ramifications of the decision, but it strikes me as a very isolated case of a student not understanding the parameters of his religion very well, as the Muslim and Orthodox Jewish scholars consulted both agreed that meeting in a public sphere with women would not violate their very strict codes. It's possible the student was just grasping for a bullshit excuse because he was lazy and didn't want to do a group project if there was a way to shirk responsibility.

That was pretty much it I suspect.

The dean found that the student possibly had a case because there was a provision for other students who lived in remote locations to not complete the group work in person. They were overly afraid of litigation probably. The prof stood up for what he believed in, and the student completed the course requirements.

The only idiot is the dean, especially since they seem to be holding possible disciplinary action over the head of the prof who disobeyed his directions.

Women run the world. Good luck with that.

I suggest he look for an all-male school. The funny thing is I was just listening to the radio and they were saying that women are basically running all schools and this has caused a feminization of society. This is why schools want all men drugged up on riddlin and other drugs. Men are not allowed to be men.

So, some radio talking head on the radio spouts a load of nonsense and you simply accept it at face value?

Get thee to a library!
