You best bet is to find a non Tualitin P3/Celeron

Most older motherboards will not work right with the Tualitin's without a lot of mods.

The processor you linked to is a CORE: Tualatin, which was the last rendition of the P3 and Celeron P3. Previous poster is suggesting you stay away from the Tualatin core and use a P3 with a Coppermine core. I dont have any experience with dell motherboard support for a processor upgrade. Can you identify the mobo chipset, i.e., BX440 or some other??

It's from the intel 440 Chipset Family. I'm worried if I get a slot to socket converter I won't be able to keep the CPU cool. Any ideas? (The heatsink in the picture is attached to the CPU)

What speed PII do you have? If it is 333MHz or under, you probably have a mobo with a 440 LX chipset. If it's 350 or higher, you have a BX chipset.

If you have a LX chipset, you really can't upgrage at all.

If you have a BX chipset, you can *probably* upgrade to any 100MHz FSB CPU. You will need a slocket adapter, probably a powerleap one (do a search on eBay, it's the best place to get them). The CPU you linked to will NOT work as it is a 133FSB CPU. You can get up to a celeron 1400MHz or a PIII 1GHz (the PIII would be VERY expensive and the Celeron would probably be faster anyway).

No matter what CPU you buy, you won't be able to reuse your heatsink, so you would have to get a new one.

Google "cpuid" and download that utility. It will ID your motherboard...Start there to see if your board has a future in upgrading.

Not sure if the poster has covered this but INtel did make a Slot 1 PIII so if they are at all compatible that may be a viable option to take.

I think he wants to go to 1 Ghz and beyond...I dont know the limits on a 440bx chipset, but I have one running at 850Mhz. It's a 566 celeron running at 100 fsb. If lastguy wants a P3, I have a P3 450 I can sell him???

That 440 was world champion for a couple of years, it took a lot of abuse and came back for more...

Nah, thanks for the offer though. I think I'm going to go Celeron 1.4Ghz if compatible.

Motherboard Model is SE440BX.

As I stated, I thought you were looking for 1Ghz+...I don't know if the 1.4G celeron will work with the 440BX but there should be some resources out there that will help you nail it down. I think there might be a conflict with the core voltage, but it's been a long time since I played with the 440, so I will step aside for a more informed source...Good luck and let us know what you find out...cya

OK, you have a 440BX chipset. That means, the fastest CPU you could theoretically* go with is the celeron 1.4GHz. Check here:
http://www.powerleap.com/SystemSearch.html

It will tell you if your system is compatible with the powerleap slocket adapter.

*I say theoretically because Dell actually made some of their systems incompatible with the powerleap adapters on purpose (I acutally had to downgrade the BIOSes in a couple of Dell systems so that they would work with the adapter).

i upgrade an resell these things all the time, as long as the cpu is a 350 (3.5X100), just go on ebay or to powerleap directly, and for $100 you can get a slot1 adapter w/ 1.4ghz p3celeron, just update your bios to the newest one. trust me it will work, i've upgraded almost 12 boxes with the board you have in that one, its really easy, powerleap comes with instructions if you have any problems on ebay you can find the adapters for around $85 shipped w/1.4ghz cpu

Those cheap little things.... work excellently so long as your motherboard supports the CPU with the latest BIOS flash. People in my town were buying the Evergreen upgrades... I stepped in and offered those after testing with a Gateway PII motherboard. They work 90% of the time :). I sold my upgrade services for $15 dollars less than the landed price for those evergreen powerleap stuff. I was lauphing all the way to the bank :D

It may not necessarily be the latest BIOS. I upgraded a few Optiplex GX1 and they actually required an older BIOS because it seemed like Dell put something in the later BIOSes that prevented the adapter from working.

You could go for a new mobo-cpu combo like the ones ECS makes....CPU-VIDEO-LAN-SOUNDCARD--->all in one for less than 100U$They use the old SDRAM so you would need to buy ram.

Here's an exemple
http://www.ecsusa.com/products/k7sem_v3.html">K7SEM</a>

It isn't some high quality stuff but for the price it's pretty good. I used to sell a lot of those ( was working in a shop). You can't get more for your money..and is new , not used like the P3 youll find on ebay.

Yeah, the powerleap adapters have built-in voltage regulators. This allows you to set the voltage to pretty much anything you want (which is good for overclocking). The way it works is that it fool the motherboard into thinking that the CPU wants 2.1V, but actually provides the CPU something else.
