Processor Upgrade?

Currently I have a POS computer a HP6370Z which has an Slot 1
PII-350mhz with Crucial 224mb Sdram PC100 and motherboard ASUS P2B98-VX.


Can I upgrade the slot 1 CPU with a Intel Pentium III 500MHz/100/512 Slot 1 CPU ?
Standard Intel Pentium III Processor
500 MHz
Slot 1, SECC2 Package
100MHz Bus Speed
512KB L2 Cache
CPU Only - No Heatsink/Fan

You would be better off buying a cheap little XP2400 BareBone system for $114 and swaping over your drives and stuff

Is that a BX or VIA based board?

You can very often drop in a ~ 1 Gig Celeron or PIII 100 MHz FSB CPU in a Slocket. Sometimes you can even use a 1.3 - 1.4 GHz Tualatin Celeron in an Upgradeware Slot-T slocket which is a pretty zippy setup.

Looks like the 500MHz Katmai is a GO! You WILL need a HS for it though.

If you can pick up a 500 Katmai on the cheap, I say go for it. Your MB will support up to 768mb of non-ECC memory.

Plus HP says I can only upgrade this motherboard to 384mb Ram with 3 128mb PC100 sticks

that usually works too, btw enable your PM, i couldn't reply... but some bios can't read it but it still works i think..

If you have some extras DIMMs you could try out, I would trust the Asus manual over the HP support.

unfortunatly I do not have extra ram... so it is saying 3*256mb hmmm
now anyone know where I can get a bios for it...since it has the only bios update from HP back in 1998.

sometimes the Hp board is a cripple version of the asus full board.. the spec should be the same but sometimes certain things will not work

You cant go by what the mfgr says anyway. I've put in lots of CPU's that are faster than what the mfgr lists as max.
